Ready to cast vote for ‘the other guy’

Published Thursday, October 23, 2008

I was born in the midst of the Great Depression ... I cannot honestly say that I remember any of those days; yet growing up, the son of self employed parents, who had their own business, I was often regaled with tales of those dire days.

I was certainly taught from youth to take responsibility for my own acts — One of the concepts taught me, in no uncertain terms, was that as a citizen, it was my duty to vote. To choose those who would represent me and mine!

When I turned 21, and voting age in 1956, I was a young family man in the Marine Corps. Thus my first ballot was by absentee ballot.

In keeping the covenant with my parent's teaching, I have voted in every election since. I have no intention to change that habit.

But this year, I am going to change my 50-plus years of practice, in that I am not going to give preference to party affiliation of those running.

My thinking goes this way — those entrenched politicians who have been in office for this last term; whether 40 years in office or only finishing a single first term, were in office when this mess in the economy came to fruition. They had a hand in creating our current problem.

So, this year, I have stopped simply 'thinking about' Voting for the other guy or gal — This year, I fully intend to cast my precious vote for the major party candidate who is the challenger — I don't care whether the guy or gal in office, is a nice person; whether I like them or not. They have shown me that their way was not the prudent way to represent me in government.

This is no joke. Anybody that is not now in public office cannot be any worse, than this present pack of politicians, who are asking us to send them back. This year, I am going to vote for the Other Guy.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

I'm a democrat as is evidenced by my prior posts on these boards. Yet, I voted for "Dick" D, the republican running for Governor here in Michigan in the last election. Not the incumbant Democrat as she's part of the problem with our economy. I also voted for a Republican on our State Supreme Court and republicans for the state legislature. I had my reasons. So, even though, I'm a democrat, I look at the Candidates first and the party they represent second. This year, I'm voting for Obama-Biden and democrats across the board for all the federal offices. I'll likely vote for republicans on the state level. Maybe? I'm still weighing the reasons I should vote democratic on the state level. Can't come up with many.

So... policy, platform, beliefs, record mean nothing? A vote of spite alone? I'm not so sure that I would call that "responsible". ???

McSame has said before a banking organization that he is Always for deregulation. Deregulation is a major reason for the financial mess we are in.

I was just visiting with family in St. Cloud and the Cities. You should see, hundreds and hundreds of Obama signs all over, even my family members who have been true-to-the-core Republicans all their lives---they too are voting for Obama/Biden. They are just sick of every past campaign that said "We're going to fix this mess!!!" Finally, Amen. Finally people are saying "we are sick of this and we are not going to take it anymore!!"

Nice article. I enjoyed reading it.

Will either one of these politicians really change anything? I don't believe so. They are all the same - it's hopeless.

No. It isn't hopeless. Obama is of a different social tier, he is for the fat cats finally being held accountable for their waste and mismanagement of tax dollars. He is for reform of all programs, ALL. When he gets elected, we will see an immediate stage-left of hundreds of federal job holders who push needless paperwork and get paid $90,000 to do it; we will see all levels of govt. having to justify their department expenses and usefullness.......this is where much of the money is going to come from to tackle some of the underfunded programs that he talks about securing more funding for. For once, fat cats are going to have to defend their jobs, their expense account just like you and I have to do at the end of each month folks, to get by. No more waste. What a breath of fresh air......

I hope your right, betterworld, if campaign signs are a sign of how a vote will go I should tell you I was on a road trip through seven states recently and McCain/Palin sign out numbered your guys by I'd say 50 to 1. I didn't see any McCain/Palin bumper stickers and only 1 bumper sticker for your guys and that was on a car that passed me doing at least 80 in a 65 mph work zone. I figured that driver has the same disregard for the lives of the highway crew as libs do for the unborn or partially born.
