Ward 1 Candidates a diverse group
City Council
Published Wednesday, October 29, 2008
The next group of people to comprise the Fergus Falls City Council will need to vote on a long list of possible city projects. If Jamie Cooper is elected to represent the first ward, he says he won’t hesitate to share his honest opinion on each one.
Jamie Cooper
“I give straight answers — I don’t beat around the bush,” he said.
Cooper, a Fergus Falls native, is a longtime musician who does freelance video, computer repair and data recovery work from the home he’s owned for 15 years. He says he’s running to represent those people “not getting a fair shake” and calls the city council an extension of the “good old boy network.”
Cooper said his top priorities include economic development and maintaining police and fire protection. He supports a water tower south of town for residents with low water pressure and says the council’s decision-making isn’t as transparent as it should be. The vote to keep parts of the council’s open forum off-camera doesn’t help, he said.
“The more transparent things are the more informed people are,” he said.
As someone who has seen both ups and downs financially — including paying and receiving child support — Cooper says he understands the needs of the average Fergus resident.
Tim Greenwood
Tim Greenwood
Tim Greenwood is no stranger to the ups and downs of local government.
A graduate of Perham High School and MSCTC-Fergus Falls, Greenwood developed an interest in politics as a student at Moorhead State University. He’s continued to follow local issues in the 21 years he’s lived in Fergus Falls, and is now making a bid for a first ward council seat.
“It’s definitely something that’s interested me for a long time and I felt the timing is right,” Greenwood said.
Greenwood is employed by Prairie Community Services and the Professional Association of Treatment Homes, a nonprofit organization serving foster children and their families. He describes himself as a good listener who’s willing to consider both sides of an issue.
A sense of humor helps, he says.
“If you take yourself too seriously, you’ll get too narrow-minded and you’ll get stuck in your ways and you won’t be able to see the other side.”
Greenwood says local swimmers need more options than Pebble Lake — “The aquatic center is a project I would like to go forward” — and suggests the city consider a welcome sign off of Interstate 94 and Lincoln Avenue. He’d also like to address complaints regarding geese at Lake Alice and foster better communication between the city and residents — through a newsletter, for example.
The key to completing these kinds of projects while keeping taxes down will be broadening the tax base, he said.
Eric Shelstad
Eric Shelstad
You could say it’s a sense of duty that prompted Eric Shelstad to run for city council.
“I feel each of us has some kind of civic responsibility,” he said recently. “Each of us has to step up to the plate in some way.”
Shelstad’s community involvement to date has included participation in Sertoma and Rotary, as well as a spot on the board of the Fergus Falls Hockey Association. He has served on the city’s Planning Commission since 2003.
With the decision by his father, Merlyn, not to seek another term on the city council, the timing for Shelstad’s run seemed right.
“He said he wasn’t going to run again, so I said, ‘I’m going to,’” Shelstad said.
A native of Alexandria, Shelstad has lived in Fergus Falls since 1994 and runs Shelstad Financial Services. He says he has the skill set that comes with running a business, and sees economic development as a major concern of residents.
Street improvements are priorities as well, Shelstad said, though “at the same time, we need to find a way to manage peoples’ property taxes properly.”
His father’s years on the council have given Shelstad additional insight into what will await him if he is elected to represent the city’s first ward.
“I certainly have a better feel for city government and how it works than if he hadn’t been involved,” Shelstad said. “I certainly realize it’s more than every other Monday night.”

Before you vote for Cooper check out this quote that he made:
"instead of earning a paycheck and answering to members of my community, I will be forced onto disability benefits which pay about the same anyway.
the only losers if I am not elected, will be the taxpayers.
either you can pay me to perform a service for you and answer to you, or you can pay me to sit around and criticize whoever is elected."

Shelstad? That's not change, that's more of the same. tsy86h, can you please post an example of any work, creative or otherwise, that you have done? (sitting is front of your comp 24/7 trolling forums doesn't count)

the city counsel should be advertising the RTC in entertainment trade magazines as a movie set.

tsy86h,
why post links to nothing as evidence of some kind?
I'm confident most readers will at least check out one of your links, or click on your user name and ponder your vast and nearly constant harassment of me.
I doubt anyone capable of comprehending what they read is fooled by your agenda or think of anything you have posted as more than that of a political rival or a scorned Ex Lover.
in my opinion, these are the most likely culprits.
if you want to read any comments I have made or comments of any registered user here at the Daily Journals comments section, you just need to click on that users name and look through their posting history.
thank you!

I encourage all voters in Fergus Falls to watch the City Council Candidate Forum on Peg Access Channel 18 at 1pm Friday (or 1am Saturday morning). Watch, listen, and then on Tuesday, vote for the candidate in your Ward that comes across as competent, prepared, and best able to articulate his/her positions on the issues that our City faces.

mccain08, you have posted 143 times, more than me, so maybe you should stop sitting in front of your computer 24/7. I am not running for city council and so it would be irrelevant to post my accomplishments.
Jamie, you have accused me more than once of being an ex-lover, sorry to let you down, but you are not quite my type. Infact, we have never met, I have just read the post that you have made on the DJ, and your nasty youtube videos and really do think that this city would be far better off just paying you the welfare check than to have you sitting on city council. Voters should see your videos, read your comments about the Fergus Police, and see how you try to blame everything bad that has happen in your life onto others.

no I personally think "tsy86h" has some personal psychological problems, possibly low self esteem issues and that is why tsy86h so frequently looks to find faults in people tsy86h has never even met.
some could thing of prejudging others like that as a form prejudice.
the strangest part about all this is that tsy86h has claimed to not even live in Fergus falls, so why all the constant concern and attacks?
what is it you are so worried about?
do you feel society will crumble of police are expected to follow the laws? or if all our cities residents were provided the water service they are already paying for?
or are you still upset that I spit some pudding out while reading a medical dictionary?
I hope you someday find yourself and are able to be less condemning of others.
best of wishes!

I have never claimed to not live in Fergus Falls. I do live in Fergus Falls. I am not attacking you, I have only posted stuff that you have alreay posted, just want voters to be informed. Do you know John McCain personally, I am guessing not, yet you post about your belief that he should not be elected based on info that you have read in newspapers and seen on TV. Somewhat the same thing, only on a lower level.

your distorted finger pointing that I'm looking for pity because I've shared publicly some of the horrors of living with an incurable disease called "sarcoidosis"?
or is it that I take some pride in knowing I have helped my son achieve honor roll 3x?

I watched your youtube video. I thik it is good that the cop took the gun with him. I would not want to write someone a ticket and have any discussion with them when there is a loaded gun there.
He was just securing the weapon that you have in reach of children at your business.
I think the video makes you look bad. Evidence or loaded pistol? I think it is a little different.
I have a carry permit. You should read up on the Minnesota gun laws and storing firearms and ammunition together, where a child could get it.
I am quite sure that the Police did not tell you to store it where you did.
Posted by metasonics (anonymous) on October 29, 2008 at 3:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
ffguy,
I also have a handgun permit and despite your assumptions, the hand gun was stored properly, in a holster with the clip in a pocket on the side of the holster exactly as officer Conrad showed me to store it about a week prior to this incident.
additionally the gun was in a cardboard box, and a plastic and metal box with a lid, under the country and under my cash register, it was approximately 6 feet away from reach and completely not visible, the only way a person could have accessed it would have been to go behind the counter and start rummaging under my cash register as the officer did.
I was under the impression search warrants were needed before just rummaging through peoples personal property.
you can call me a liar all you want, I have eye witness' that were present when Officer Conrad showed me how to store it and approved the location.
I suggest you should read up on Minnesota laws regarding handgun storage.
the only way this would have been unlawful were if it had been stored loaded.
of course if the police didn't tell me to take matters into my own hands when I reported to them that I was having problems with drug dealers including having a gun stuck in my nostril while breaking up a drug deal outside my business, I wouldn't have bought the handgun in the first place.
but, who cares right?
as long as justice is handed out unfairly and people are criminalized while being in complete compliance of the law.
I suppose there were more teens gathering in a location than made local police comfortable, or at least thats what they told me, and it must have gotten old having me keep them informed of the the illegal activities some are involved in locally.
why would it be a bad thing for police to have this knowledge again?
in fact why would it be bad to have teens in a concentrated area versus running all over the place from a law enforcement aspect?

ffguy,
I find it suspect that in previous posts you downplay the police destroying squad cars and causing injuries in high speed chases due to inappropriate practices,
I doubt you would even consider the possibility that any police would ever do anything even remotely outside the law, or at least I am sure you wouldn't admit it.
common sense tells us that noone is perfect at their jobs and occasionally we all make mistakes, such as my mistake of trusting the advice of local police.
I now know that the only time a citizen should feel comfortable talking with police is with a video camera.
I also know that running in an election and talking openly about inappropriate practices by police can result in death threats that although police should be investigating go completely unabated when the weblogs alone would provide much insite into who is participating in these federal election fraud type practices.
death threats against political candidates are treated like sensationalism in Fergus falls?
how sad is that?
I say this is proof of the "good ol boy network" at it's finest.
how do you justify the pepperspray and baton beatings that happened to former council member Gullickson after being handcuffed following his low speed chase and alleged DWI charge?
why is that video still widely boasted about by officers yet kept out of public access?
Shameful!!!!!

like when his father voted in favor of a pay raise when the city couldn't afford it?
http://www.fergusfallsjournal.com/news/2...
apparently civic duty requires a bigger paycheck for some more so than for others.
I hope a solution for the water problems of the hilltop neighborhood would be of concern for the residents of ward one.
I know I wouldn't want to live in a city very long that charges me for water I can barely use.
the suggestions of using pumps are pathetic, what good are pumps if there is not enough water coming to the pump in the first place?
do you really buy Mr. Shelstads suggestion that a water town would blow out the entire cities water system?
why hasn't that happened on the other side of the city which has two water towers?
why is it acceptable to spend $600k then an additional $400k to lower the water on pebble lake but not a dime to fulfill an obligation to an entire neighbor hood that can't take a decent shower if their neighbor is?
these residents are paying for this service, the city continually filibusters this issue and pushes it under the rug.
please consider the issues rather than bloodlines this election.

Jamie, the towm of Fergus Falls does not (and did not) need your type of Vigilante attitude. You had no need for a gun in your arcade, it was just a showpiece for you to brag about. How many other businesses in Fergus Falls have a handgun with ammo under the couter?

Ole_Potato,
are you the drug dealer that stuck your gun in my nose?
you certainly seem to have nothing but dislike of me to post about?
heres a question for you, how many other business owners have dared even try to break up a drug deal?, only to have the dealer pull a gun on them, and when informing the police have been told to take matters into their own hands?
I'm just the messenger here, I don't support or encourage vigilantism, but when the police themselves are telling you to stop calling and you are having a gun pulled on you, what should a concerned citizen do?
just let the drug dealers feed kids crack and meth?
not on my watch!
I feel the public scrutiny, while being undeserved is worth it, if it prevented even one kid from becoming another local drug addict.

Are you claiming to never have used crack, meth, or any other illegal drug, and NEVER to have shared (or fed) such drugs to anyone under 21? And to never have dealt such things yourself? Careful with your answer here.

I guess we'd have to cut services, translation "I have no idea what an LGA is", but it sure makes me laugh. #2, I'll say what he said, translation "I must be too high to speak, I hope nobody notices". #3 RTC was his soapbox for the 'movies', he speaks the most words at this answer, but still says nothing, and finishes with tearing it down. #4 Lake Alice cleanup, its not that awful of a place, WHAT? Translation "I've never been there, or if I have I couldn't see straight" #5 Water Pressure "There are petitions" Gravity-what does that have to do with it?

"I wouldn't be all that surprised if some on our police force decided to beat me up like they did to Gullickson." -Jaime Cooper
Well Jaime, if YOU drive your car while DRUNK, and then CALL 9-1-1 while the officer attempts to pull you over for expired license tabs, telling the operator that you have done nothing wrong. And once stopped being charged with:
"fleeing a police officer, obstructing the legal process, third degree DWI refusal and no current registration."
You to ought to be pepper sprayed and Tazed into compliance. Rumor has it that Brian screamed like a little girl when he took a ride on the tazer.
http://www.fergusfallsjournal.com/news/2...
"Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Fir and Union, Fergus Falls Police attempted to pull Gullickson over for expired license plate tabs. Gullickson did not pull over, according to the report. The vehicle came to a stop at Greenfield Street and County Highway 111. Gullickson was uncooperative, noncompliant and resisted arrest, police said. A taser and pepper spray were used to subdue him. Alcohol was detected on Gullickson’s breath and he refused testing, according to the police report."

not that your bottom feeder tactics deserve answers but out of hope to remedy your baseless and deceptive tactics, out of hope of righting you wrongs, I have never used crack, meth or any other illicit substance nor have I ever shared or fed drugs to anyone period let alone persons under 21.

as usual the deceptive and wretched chose to hide in anonymity, for if they ever said a truth they would proudly stand behind their words and sign their posts. lake Alice is in fine condition, there have been efforts in the past to clean it up, it is what it is, and we should appreciate it for that. it is deceptive for candidates to suggest there will be tax dollars available in the near future to help any clean-up there. common sense tells us that the water pressure problems of the hilltop area would be best solved through plumbing updates and a water tower, it is insulting to suggest that a water tower would destroy our cities water infrastructure. how stupid do they think we are? I can at least respect Ms. Thackers opposition as she makes a reasonable case citing economic conditions and development history of the area. I still oppose her view, but respect her honest reasoning and integrity. how can we accomplish anything if lies and political posturing are brought into this process? keep that in mind when voting!

as for the question regarding reduced LGA, if we were to experience a reduction in state funding as many have suggested we will, then obviously there will be a reduction in services, I feel that I answered the question sufficiently.
obviously the only other option would be to raise taxes, and I will not consider a tax increase while there is so much wasteful spending currently. so again, I feel my answer was direct and to the point. despite the claims of some with questionable agendas and motives, I did not get involved with the election process for popularity or selfish motives.
I was asked to run, I was challenged to not only talk the talk but to walk the walk.
that is exactly what I am doing and what I will continue to do if elected.
I have no idea how many or few votes I may get and honestly don't care.
I have lived in the public eye most of my life in the entertainment industry, if I ever had such shallow needs as to derive self worth from adoring masses, they would have been satisfied many years ago.
as a 300 lb 6 foot 4 man, I have always had power, I have never had a need to crave power. this is why I find Lala's megalomania allegations questionable.
rather than relying on brutishness or my size advantage over others, I have always chosen instead to use my mind.
I know this doesn't prevent the occasional proverbial poodle from barking from behind the couch as some chose to do here online.
I have persevered in the face of adversity even to the point of enduring death threats, police corruption, and incurable disease.
I have already bested those who hide in the shadows of anonymity and deception.
win or lose this election, I am the better man!
that has always been and will always be the only reward I need! and the only reward worth having!
thank you

Norse,
what I find most questionable regarding the Gullickson incidents is that he seemed to be under the assumption that if people were aware of his position that he would be privy to special privileges.
why would an elected city council member get that idea?
additionally, no matter what the offense, once the suspect is handcuffed, there is no need for tazers, pepper spray, or batons.
no citizen should ever be beaten to point of not being able to walk, whether they are guilty of a crime or not.
that difference in law enforcement is what makes our nation better than more brutal nations.
we have a due process in this nation, it is not the duty or right for police to dole out beatings as a form of street justice and is abhorred by all people who love Freedom and this Nation.

Councilmemeber Gullickson was on a spiraling path, as evidenced from this incident and the one noted prior to this at the Z103 bar. http://www.fergusfallsjournal.com/news/2...
"A tense city council meeting ended in fireworks Monday as Mayor Russell Anderson read aloud a letter that accused the Fourth Ward's Brian Gullickson of misusing his position as a council member."
[Larson wrote that Gullickson, who was at the Z103 bar on Saturday night, Jan. 21, was angry because the bar manager would not accept his check. “Mr. Gullickson became irate and asked if we appreciated having our liquor license. He informed (the bar manager), that, ‘you guys have been busted so many times for breaking liquor laws.' He then implied that he was going to see to it that we lose our license,” Larson wrote. “He informed (the bar manager) that he was going to lose his job on Monday. I have purposefully left out the colorful language that was used during this conversation as well as the inappropriate comments that was used during this conversation as well as the inappropriate comments regarding past managers.”]
Gully had a right to peacefully comply with the officer's request to stop based on the expired tabs. Gully CHOSE a path all on his own (likely assisted by his other choice to drink himself drunk), which forced the Police officers to escalate response tactics in their DUTY to protect and Server the FINE Law Abiding Citizens whom Gully was disregarding and putting at RISK.
Spoiled Rotten Little Baby, not unlike a certain candidate for the current City Council election.

Lala,
I seek equality, and a fair shake for all people, I feel the bare minimum we should expect from our publicly paid servants is that they stay within the laws we trust them to enforce.
I feel that as a community we should provide the services to our residents that we charge them for.
I believe in dealing squarely and honestly.

I have to concur with ole on the lake alice issue. Having lived near it for most of my life, I can tell you it has really gone awry as of the last few years. Specifically there used to be nice trees with foiliage on the islands, now the cormorants have destroyed every leaf on one, and are moving to the other, and possible onto the nearby shore. They have also done the same at Grotto. Since the DNR protects these birds, they should also provide funding to keep them from destroying public and personal property.
As for cleaning the rest of the lake up and making it a viable recreational area to ice-skate, have a picnic or go for a walk, we owe this to ourselves and to our neighbors.

"Rumor has it that Brian screamed like a little girl when he took a ride on the tazer" - Norse,
I've never met Mr. Gullickson, and I find it sickening how elated the idea of another persons pain makes you. what warped you into this person? would your parents even recognize you anymore? is this what they raised you to be?
I think the police videos should be available to the public.

Norse,
how have geese prevented anyone from ice-skating, having a picnic or going for a walk around lake Alice?

Norse,
when did you start shaking your fists in the air at birds?
LOL

Jaime, when is the last time you went with your 'family' to lake alice for any wholesome activity?
Did I mention Geese? I pointed out the destruction of the Cormorants, those black creatures that inhabit the center Island of bare trees.
Since you bring up geese, there are concerns over the droppings when large numbers of geese gather on the lake. Nobody likes to step in that in the grass or on the road. The bottom of the 'lake' must have at least a foot muck.
This COULD be so much more of an asset to Fergus Falls.

"when did you start shaking your fists in the air at birds?"
I don't Jaime. I point my shotgun in the air at the ones that are legal targets, and bring down as many as the current season's limit allows. Now if they would open a season on those cormorants, perhaps we could once again enjoy the flora and fauna.

Knowing Brian personally at least for a short time, and dealing with him in a business capacity, I find it very telling that for as big (better) a man as he thought himself to be, when he faced the music for his unlawful actions he cried like a little girl. Same is probably true for 6 foot 4 inch tall 'goliaths' as well. My money is always going to be on the David's of the world.
Strike that, we have seen over and over again that a certain someone already whines and cries (oops, tries to cry) about being framed for a gun, being held accountable for people he allowed to live in his house, and just about every other poor poor pitiful 'fruits' that living life in the manner which he has chosen produces.

I am not related to any philistines as David was so successful that he kicked that entire race off the planet.
there is nothing pitiful about having hardships or being stricken with a disease
all people get knocked down, what matters is if you get back up.
how cowardly and sad to hide behind a veil of deception and anonymity with a sharp tongue towards those who persevere despite adversity.
I understand that you are down now Norse, and I offer my hand to help you back up.

LOL Heime, how long were you planning to leave your post count at 666? How many screenshots did you take of it?
Why are YOU so interested in knowing who a person you try over and over to offend is? My skin is thick and yours seems to be so thin it pops everytime the feeble mind feels oppressed. The Goofy comment probably comes from the visuals from the peg access video. The candidate on the left appears to be goofy and so many things are just funny to him.
You'll play this over and over on November 5th! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMTxP33RP...

Norse,
I've never tried to offend you, in all honesty, my heart goes out to you.
I can't imagine what events you've been through to arrive at this point in your life.
I wish I knew how to help you heal whatever it is that put these tendencies in you.

the Fergus forum is running unofficial polls for all the locally relevant election races.
obviously these polls have no real impact on the actual election however,
so far it says I have 75% of the vote.
I am not affiliated with the Fergus forum in with the exception of being a registered poster

Here are a few predictions for tomorrow:
Obama wins quite handily
Coleman wins a close race over Franken
Democrats pick up 5-6 Senate seats and 25 House seats
Michele Bachmann loses because she is stupid
Stumbo beats Nornes because Bud wears a stupid sailor cap
Leland wins as Mayor - Howland, Strauch and Skip (20 votes for Skip) trail in that order
Thacker in Ward 4, Heaton and Tomhave a distant 2nd & 3rd
Connelly or Rundquist in Ward 3, Litt & Kvenvolden follow
Fish in Ward 2 over Gunderson
Shelstad in Ward 1, followed by Greenwood & Cooper (74 votes for Cooper, 300 short of what he needs)

Bud Nornes claimed he already knows the results too.
and here I thought the voters decide the elections.

Yes Mr Cooper, the voters do decide and I do not "know the results". Once again your reading comprehension fails you - these are merely personal "predictions" based my study of these particular races. Should anyone predict a win for you in Ward 1, I'm sure you would have had a different reaction. But there is no chance that hell will freeze over tomorrow.

imagine for a moment if I do win.
wouldn't that be something? a win without spending even one cent on ads or signs and without accepting financial contributions at all.
what kind of message would that send?
thank you!

imagine for a moment that I won the Powerball.
wouldn't that be something?
my odds of winning are actually better than yours.
imagine for a moment that every voter in ward 1 saw all of your videos on youtube.
you would get far less than the 74 votes that I foresee in your future.
you ran as a lark.
I saw the video of the candidate forum - your "performance" was a joke.
your entire "campaign" has been a big joke.
you are no more qualified to serve on the City Council than Barney Rubble is (you know, the guy that you sound like when you laughed after nearly every one-sentence answer during the candidate forum).
the freak show continues, but at least this chapter will end tomorrow night.

well certainly the election will be over tomorrow, and hopefully the people in Fergus falls ward 1 have seen all my videos.
hopefully they would rather have a genuine person represent them than just follow a monarchy of a sorts and elect whichever name will keep voting themselves pay raises while ignoring the needs and financial situations the residents of this city have been forced to endure for far to long!
if the results come out exactly 74, I'm going to request a investigation!
My life has been threatened too many times for a coincidence that to go un-investigated.
what a slap in the face of democracy!
how pathetic that your guy is willing to resort to these tactics.
I haven't even spent a penny or threatened anyone and look how serious of threat you view me as.
you've been posting here for months saying what a joke I am.
imagine if I had spent some money on this.
I hope people vote on the issues instead of bloodlines and lies.
thanks!

when has laughter hurt anyone?
listen to your Doctor, laughter is healthy!

No chip here Cooper - I just call them as I see them. Your entire campaign was a joke, and you only did it because it drew attention to you - so saying what a "joke" you are - if the shoe fits, I guess you're wearing it.

I ran to represent people in my neighborhood who are tired of being told their homes are not worth the city investing in fixing the water pressure problems they face.
also because I'd like to see more jobs and more opportunities in this city.
