Shelstad wins city Ward 1 race

Published Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Local businessman Eric Shelstad will be among the newest members of the Fergus Falls City Council come January.

Shelstad defeated Jamie Cooper and Tim Greenwood for the Ward 1 seat Tuesday night. Shelstad, a member of the Fergus Falls Planning Commission since 2003, owns Shelstad Financial Services.

Shelstad said Tuesday he’s excited to start learning and get going. He was at a neighbor’s house when he learned the results of the race, and his father, Merlyn, a retiring alderman, was on-hand to wish him well.

“He was sitting right across the table from me,” Shelstad said. “He shook my hand and congratulated me.”

Fellow candidate Tim Greenwood came in second with 231 votes.

“It would, of course, have been great to win,” he said, “but I believe Eric will do a good job for our ward. It was a fun race. I really enjoyed it.”

Jamie Cooper, who announced his candidacy in early August, was not available for comment Tuesday night. His votes totaled 193.

Congrats to Shelstad the 2nd.
hopefully he will fix the water problems for the hilltop neighborhood, even if the price tag is similar to that which the city spent to lower pebble lake in his neighborhood.
may he find a way to preserve the RTC, and resist the temptation to vote himself a pay raise despite the advice of other council members which Shelstad the 1st ignored.
the people have spoken and I thank those who voted for me!
despite the fact that I didn't knock on any doors, I didn't accept any financial contributions or spend one cent on any kind of advertising or yard signs, I persevered death threats and stuck it out to the end.
I feel 193 votes is a very good number!
thank you!

LOL, true character shines through even in the insincerity of the concession post. Lack of preparation, coupled with failure to do what it takes to succeed is no badge of honor. (even the transient hobo got more votes than the preacherman) To be sure you will have variety in life today. May you live on this earth forever!

May God Bless you in ways that show you how real he is.

Apparently this village has 193 I d 10 T's.

Congatulations to Mr. Shelstad and the Brilliant citizens of Fergus Falls.

The lack of class on Cooper's part should be no big surprise to anyone that has been following his "campaign" - the whole thing was a big joke, much like the Skip Mallas for mayor concept.

Direct quotes from Mr Jamie Cooper (10/6/08) - "I would probablly be better off not winning" and "I'm perhaps too outspoken for my own good" - http://www.fergusforum.com/forum/thread-...... Post #8

It's hard to argue against those two statements.

Skip and Cooper didn't win? Wow...I'm shocked. Perhaps quoting the bible more would have helped. It's a shame. I'd demand a recount Coop!

Thanks for all the entertaining posts to this website though. It's been a great ride.

GO BSU!

Nice concession speech Coop. Your words show exactly why you did not get elected. Shelstad the 2nd.....pebble lake in his neighborhood......Shelstad the 1st.....Maybe you could act like a true politician and concede with dignity and say congratulations to ALL of your running mates. I suggest you go back to your 3rd class rock band and use the conspiracy theories you speak of to write some good tunes.

certainly all people have personal responsibility, but at the same time, who is to blame for the ills of society?
we are all in the same boat here.
I believe that much of what makes us who we are comes from coping within our environment.
how residents live and cope within the conditions of a community speaks volumes.
I never would have never owned a handgun if it were not for having one stuck in my face.
what does it that say about this community?
now because I stood up to a drug dealer and police looked the other way when I asked for help, I get compared to some over privileged child predator?
the AP was right, this is a backwards community!
no wonder the young get out as soon as possible.
who can blame them.
now that the election is over, who's ready to flip the bill for the RTC demolition?
I hope you paid attention to the issues, because you will be paying, more and more! and getting less and less.
