MSCTC students to see a minimum of 3% tuition increase for 2009
Published Thursday, November 6, 2008
When next year’s state budget is approved, MSCTC students will probably not be happy. At the Minnesota State College Student Association Fall General Assembly Chancellor James H. McCormick spoke of his plans for secondary education funding. McCormick, who is Chancellor of the Minnesota State College and Universities, will propose to the Minnesota State Congress that secondary education institutions would need 126 million dollars in funding for 2009. If the 126 million dollars is approved, MSCTC students would see their tuition rise 3% in 2009. Chancellor McCormick cautioned the audience by saying that “126 million is what we’ll propose, but due to the state’s deficit we may not get what we ask for.” Robert Anderson, the Associate Dean of Student Services at MSCTC-Fergus Falls, said that 3% would be an appropriate hike in tuition. He felt that it accommodates inflation and that students would be able to afford the increase.
MSCTC-Fergus Falls’ students are not strangers to increased tuition. According to records, MSCTC’s tuition has gone up from $65.60 per credit in 1998 to $140.85 per credit in 2008. MSCTC has seen a 2% increase in tuition from last year. The college had a double digit rise in tuition 4 years in a row between 2001 and 2004. As reported earlier in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal, student enrolment is down at MSCTC over the past few years. Robert Anderson said that, “a rise in tuition, along with other factors, has probably caused enrolment to go down.”
Students all around the state of Minnesota will be affected by the rise in tuition. Hopefully the Minnesota Congress will approve the proposal and try to make secondary education more affordable for everyone that wants to go.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by ajohnsonx (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 8:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Thats only approximately a $4.25 raise per credit....@ 30 credits a year thats only about $127 per year...the sky is falling..the sky is falling.
Solution
1.Take out student loans.
2.Graduate.
3.Get a job.
4.Contribute to society
5.Pay back loans.

Is this a news article? Or an opinion piece? It reads like a news story until the last paragraph, when it turns into an editorial.

So how many college grads does one need at a lemonade stand? Or do you just need one to do the bookkeeping for you?

The question is…if we are all humans why do racial based scholarships exist? The fact of the matter is that to segrigate people by race is detrimental to human equality. This includes ‘white’ based scholarships

When Oprah was asked how she felt about Obama being elected as President, she said to the reporter, "well, Im a person of color, as are you, we should be proud." If I said, "I am a white person and so are you, we should be proud." Rev. Jesee Jackson would be all over the place claiming racism...how come its not when a "person of color" says it....Good point Mr. Lincoln.

ajohnsonx,
you just did say that.
I don't hear Jesse Jackson crying over it.
you just disproved your own point and in the same post.
Wow you're good, and so intelligent!
you should be proud!
LOL

If ajohnsonx posts on the Daily Journal comments, and Rev. Jesse Jackson doesn't read it, does that make ajohnsonx's point unposted or invalid?
OR-
If you get 193 votes and come in last, does that make you shut up?

If ajohnsonx posts racist crap on the Daily Journal comments, does that still make the GOP the new minority?
yes it does!
and for good reasons!

Well Jamie, you sure don't have much respect for our current president, so why should we respect YOUR president elect?
