Thoughts about who is red and who is blue
Published Thursday, November 13, 2008
A couple cold windy morning thoughts, with all the clamor of the past couple of decades concerning who was “red;” and who was “blue.”
As a person who made his living for many years with words, both spoken and written, I can’t help but recall a time not so long ago when the very people so desirous of being counted as strongly, “red over the last 20 years,” are the same people who devoted endless energy to ferreting out the “reds” to deport, and/or try them for treason.
One of the icons of current “reds,” Richard M. Nixon, did indeed make a career of seeking out and punishing the “reds” of five decades ago.
To my “red” friends, I can only say, y’all know I have a goofy sense of humor. Oh yeah: Go Blue! I really like Duke. Enjoy the day.
Ned Jimmerson - Underwood

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by concerned08 (anonymous) on November 13, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It makes perfect sense. Mr Jimmerson is saying it's cute that the "reds" nowadays (Republicans) are the very ones who took such pains to eradicate "reds" (communists) some decades ago. "Go blue" nowadays can be a cheer for the Democrats or a sports team. He's merely commenting on how labels change with the times. Quite clever, and right on the mark.

I seem to remember that the color for Republicans was blue a few years ago. How did it get taken away?

Just as the red of our Red, White and Blue is symbolic of the blood shed for our freedom, so too the color must connote blood in the recent sense that the republican agenda is steeped in hawkish ways that lead us to war. Fitting.
That'd be my guess.
