Government has to be involved

Published Tuesday, May 8, 2007

Rep. Bud Nornes' stand on the statewide Freedom to Breathe law reinforces a reason why I favor Democratic Party principles over Republican.

The traditional Republican stand is “less government is better government.” Rep. Nornes feels that government mandating the public not having to breathe second-hand smoke is a taking of personal liberties. What about the personal liberties of workers and families who are subjected to serious health risks from second-hand smoke in public places? I feel that there is a legitimate time and place for government intervention. Rep. Nornes' stand on this issue is simply wrong and ignores the overriding health issues of the matter.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

Mechanic shops have workers in it-do you want your car fixed? A coal miner mines the coal so you can have power. Using workers health just isn't a good argument.
