Youngster didn’t care for the Haloween tricks
Published Saturday, November 15, 2008
On Halloween night, I went trick or treating with my friend. We were doing the all-around-town and we stopped at many houses. When we stopped by a house on Lake Alice, there was a McCain sign on the lawn. As my parents are Democrats, taken by their beliefs, I playfully thought “oh no.”
Well, it came to be “oh no.” We went to the house and there were trick or treaters ahead of us. I heard the man at the door ask, “Do you like McCain?” They said “yes,” and he gave them two or three pieces of candy.
When we went up the house, he asked, “Do you like McCain?” I being faithful to Obama, said “no.” He said “then you can have one piece.” My friend, being of a Republican house family, said “yes,” and he gave her two or three.
As we went on, I began to think. It doesn’t have anything to do with Halloween. He may have been joking, but that kind of “joking” should be kept to yourself.
I think it was very inappropriate of him.
Is this what our country is coming to? Forcing kids to take sides before they can even vote? I hope not.

and by the way if this did happen it is wrong shame on that house for messing with kids that can't vote anyway. it don't matter who you support.

...ahhh, the good old 'inclusive' 'big tent' Republican party is at it again. That homeowner did a wonderful job of being an ambassador and representative for his party. I'm sure that'll stick with that kid for the rest of his life...

Exactly what I was thinking Earl. I would only add, get used to it little girl if you have to deal with the GOP. Today it’s candy, tomorrow it will be your wages, then your retirement savings and health care.

Mackenzie, out the jerk. We'd all like to know who he is so we can avoid sharing our wealth at his place of business.

This was a good letter Mackenzie, and you should be proud that you wrote it. And, to the person who wrote "this must be a smart 12-year old", she is. More over, she is a young teen who cares about her community. What a sad testament that this had to happen; okay everybody, enough with the cynacism, and on with the spirit of cooperation. We have a chance here to change our ugly, greedy, selfish world. Let's do it.

So, had it been an Obama supporter doing the same thing, would we be writing to the paper? Yes, it is silly, but we still live in a free country, do we not, or did something change w/ this last election that I was not told about? Either way, give the kids candy! Keep the dentists in business!!!

All right people listen up! I was there that night; yes, it was I who started this thing with the candy. I am a 16 year old politically active student who was going trick-or-treating around Lake Alice with a friend. My sister and I had gone out earlier and being a SMART person like I am, I decided to support my candidate even on this festive night. I wore a McCain-Palin pin on my Rapunzel dress. Going out previously with my sister we didn't have much time; therefore, we decided to only stop at houses with political signs. I cannot tell you how many nasty, NASTY looks I got from some people answering their doors. Some even refused to acknowledge me at all, just my sister, who was wearing no political pins.
Later at Lake Alice this sweet man noticed my pin in the dim light and being true to my OWN beliefs, beliefs that I have thoroughly researched since I was 12, not simply adopting my parents, I answered yes. My friend, also an intelligent person, agreed.
1st of all Mackenzie, I hope that from this you learn to always stand up for your beliefs, not uphold your parents, and that before you agree with something, you will look into the matter thoroughly. Also, there is no way that a 12-year old wrote this. M(r)s. Schara, you would appear to have the same problem that my mother does when editing my papers, it sounds too old. Next time either let your daughter write it, or sound younger.
2nd, people, this was this man's generosity to give out candy, his candy. He didn't have to give any out, he chose to. And with the amount of candy she had trust me, she needed no more 'handouts' for the night.
3rd, Weasel, get the facts right. It is the democrat party who would like to, and will be, taxing more of your money, than the GOP wanted to.
4th, You go Jerry! Right on!
(Note this was written by a 16-year old PSEO student, not her mother.)

Mature comments from a mature 16 year old...that still goes trick or treating.

FreedomAintfree, thanks for your advise. I don’t know what I was thinking, basing my previous post on my sixty years of life experience, when all I had to really do was ask you what your sixteen years of life experience has taught you. Surely you know more than I about paying taxes and working at a job and planning for retirement. I hope you will be available for future comments on these pages so as to set us old geezers straight just in case we get another silly idea like posting our thoughts based on our own life experiences. It’s so much more realistic to make future decisions based on your thoroughly researched esoteric studies gained from the internet or the high school library.

There is nothing wrong with a kid wearing a McCaim/Palin button on Halloween night. After all, the whole idea is to scare the bejesus out of people. And redistribute the candy.

Obama is the trick of the century alright. The tricking will be making the American people believe all of his mistakes are Bush's fault. But, he doesn't have to worry, he has the media to do his bidding. Unless they turn on him.

FreedomAintFree -
Perhaps you ought to leave the trick-or-treating to your little sister and your campaign buttons at home. I would venture to guess that the reason you were not "acknowledged" (aka - given candy) is that 16 is far too old to be trick-or-treating. The nasty looks were not about your buttons, they were in disgust. I'd have ignored you too, if you had held out your bag at my doorstep, and given your younger sibling double her share.

Oh yeah justme because my younger sister is 1 year younger than me oh my gosh! It is my choice to go trick-or-treating. After all it is still acceptable in other places than stupid Fergus, but hey if you 'adults' are going to dress up like sluts and man whores, than man I guess I better wait a little longer and lose 3/4 of my clothes. And if you don't know what I mean, then perhaps you need to take a look at a Halloween store next year as those are actual costumes I found.

It is 'your choice' to go trick-or-treating, just as it was the person's 'choice' to GIVE YOU as much candy as they wanted. FAF, it's great that you are taking an interest in politics and government. But by whining about not getting your share and calling people 'sluts and man whores' wipes you clean of any credibility at all. Rather, it just clarifies the thought that you still have A LOT of growing up to do.

Another teen that knows everything.Poor parents! You have about another 5 yrs. to put up with the little know it all. By then something should have smacked him between the eyes, and reality set in. Until then, not much you can do. 16 and still going around asking for candy, very mature!

It this really happened then yes the homeowner is quite lame and petty. Also the girl with the Mcain button was obviously looking for a reaction from somone.
Lastly, while I agree that something maybe needs to be done about the disparity between the rich and the poor in this country, I don't really think that jumping the ship from democratic capialism to socialism is not the answer which by all the account I have seen certainly seems to be what Obama wants. Where on earth is the incetive to get off your butts and do for yourself? What ever happened to working hard and being humble while doing so? It's always give me, give me, give me. What a bunch of whiners, complainers and lazy butts our country has become. SAD!

LOL! Funny story. People never cease to amaze me. I think next year I'm going to ask all the kids if they are Muhammad supporters? If they say no I will give them a carrot and if they say yes I will give them a handful of candy.

It's too bad, FAF, that your parents have not taught you any better to be respectful towards your elders. Maybe you and your sister, both too old for the trick-or-treating, imo, should find something more productive to do with your Halloween nights from now on. It may be your choice to go trick or treating, but it is every homeowner's choice whether to answer the door and dole out candy to such snots. As for the costumes you describe, I must not shop where you do.

"He was just "spreading the wealth". You best get used to it, steal from the rich, give to the non-taxpayers! Even democratic weasels will have to share their fish, if they have any! This has to be written by a democratic parent, complaining about not getting enough "hand-outs"."
Jerry, Maybe you Republicans should have went to that house and asked for billions of dollars for corporate bail-out "hand-outs". You Republicans are Very good at that and very successful in getting it.
Trick or Treat? You give both and its not candy.
