Knife found in BL locker
Published Monday, November 17, 2008
A Battle Lake High School student is facing disciplinary action after a knife was found in a school locker.
A call was made to the County Sherriff’s Department Nov. 14 after Battle Lake school officials found a small hunting knife in the locker.
The locker was being searched for a possible tobacco violation when the knife was found in a jacket pocket.
The student had forgotten to remove the knife from the hunting jacket before entering the school, said Principal Jeff Drake.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by walleye29 (anonymous) on November 17, 2008 at 2:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Why was the sheriff called? Don't school officals know that Battle Lake has it's own police department? I wonder how they would feel if the Battle Lake Police contacted the Underwood Schools when they had questions reqarding educational matters within the Battle Lake District and then went public with the event.

Maybe it's because there are NO Police on duty in Battle Lake during the daytime hours, save one day a week or so.

I agree with you bringing up the issue of searching lockers for tobacco in the first place. Certainly this is not the type of conduct that school administrators should spend thier time or our tax dollars on. It would be interesting to see how the district handles the discipline in this matter. Certainly something should be done to discourage this type of activity, but the punishment should fit the crime. Perhaps some community service like cleaning classrooms after school for a couple of days. As far as there not being an officer on duty, the Chief is on 24 hour call, I sure he would be more than happy to return a call to the school about incidents that happen within his juridiction. Small town officers are often looked down on as not being as knowlwdgable as thier counterparts in bigger departments, but this is anything but the truth. In fact they are often called upon to deal with a much larger scope of problems because they do not have the luxury to hand cases off to specialists like they do in bigger agencies.

You guys are so ignorant its not even funny. Attitudes like yours are why we have had things like Columbine, etc happen. Safety first. Search lockers.

Is this how we are to find out that there is potential harm to our children, by the Daily Journal? The parents of the students that go to Battle Lake were never notified of this. Something is wrong with this whole thing that we can't let the parents know but we will let the whole county know.

At least the kid wasn't carrying the knife around with him. That would be much worse I think.

to ffbison, they were looking for tobacco not weapons. Tobacco violations are not that important. It is a family matter, unless the child is caught during the normal school activities. As far as contacting all the parents in the districy, for what? The kid had a knife in his locker, a pair of scissors are just as deadly. No one was threatened. I don't consider myself ignorant about this subject either, I am a parant and a retired police officer with 35 years of service.
