City leaders fail to take action

Published Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Let me get this straight: A local student was purposely burned without provocation in our public school; charges were issued against those responsible for the attack; a plea bargain was reached by the city attorney without consulting the victim (a violation of state law); the city attorney was admonished; and yet our mayor and city council lends their full support to the city attorney. Did I leave anything out?

I've seen more action taken against our sanitation people if someone's garbage isn't picked up on time.

To the Johnson family: Good luck with your law suit. You have my full support.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

apparently streaking is more of a crime than what happened here.

Why does this suprise anyone?

Well if they would have declined the plea bargain than you all would be moaning about wasting tax payer money by taking it to court. Sure are alot of experts on EVERYTHING around here.

I think we're all intelligent enough to know the difference between a kid who streaked as a prank - and did NOT need to be prosecuted - and a kid who purposefully BURNED another kid. Don't make assumptions on our part fencesitter. I would have been more than happy to see that kid prosecuted to the fullest.

I'm just glad everyone here is well enough informed of the merits of the case to convey worthwhile opinions.

Amen bigkahunaburger. It's time to let this whole thing rest and it not be dragged on anymore.

Amen you say?
no need to invoke Egyptian Gods!
this kind of corruption is not tolerable!
but it will continue as long as we sit around doing nothing about it!

Our entire government structure was designed by our Constitutional Framers. Their main source of reference? The Bible. MERRY CHRISTMAS metasonics!

Let's not get religion and beliefs into this. There's enough hate and discontent with the different beliefs out there in the world and it's not worth it. Keep to the subject, Please.

Nicely put, Tom!! I think many have missed the point here. It's not even about the 'kids', it's about the city attorney NOT doing his job. He is collecting OUR money, and should at a minimum DO HIS JOB. For the mayor and city council to 'stand by' him, while he gets a baby wrist slap from the board, just reeks of that 'good old boy' thinking. He should be relieved of his duties, and replaced by an ethical attorney (if such could actually be found) to do what they are supposedly sworn to do... uphold the law. Shame to the lot!
And as for the Johnsons.....my prayers are with you, for you as you fight for what's right. Sadly, too few are willing to do so anymore.

Been enough years. New city council, how about a new city attorney?? Cuts down on the good 'ol boys club.

If the son is so damaged by this, why doesn't he show up at the city council meetings? I see plenty of his mom, but not so much of the son, who by the way, is a legal adult. This is a finished case.

Same old monday morning quarterbacks with the same complaints about the people that give of their time to try and make this a better community. I believe that our council members ran to try to improve Fergus Falls. Not to sit on a council that tries to protect its "good old boys." Get a life!

globalcooling ,
are you really so ignorant that you believe our constitution was primarily influenced by the Bible?
I didn't know Napoleon wrote the Bible?
where is the chapter on Pax Romana in the Bible?
where is there any mention of Democracy in the Bible?
the Bible seems to favor monarchy.
not at all the vision this nation was founded on.
