What a tragic end to an event for a worthy cause! The story made our "Island Packet" in Hilton Head Island, S.C. I'm hoping for a quick recovery.

Another Fergus Falls native, John Haarstad (my brother), a 1971 graduate, is an electrical engineer and team leader at the Kennedy Space Center, and has been working on all the space shuttles for many years.

We have a very active Band Booster Club at the school my son attends. He is in the Marching Band, the Orchestra and the Jazz Ensemble. The funds allocated for band here is also minimal, although no positions have been cut so far. We only have 40+ band members (high school level), and 13 in the Jazz Ensemble, but the Band Boosters has to raise the rest of the money necessary for the program. They do that by selling food at the football games, a fish fry dinner, car washes, and, surprisingly successful, standing outside a grocery store playing instruments and askng people to donate to the bands. Also, we have just decided to make every band member responsible for raising his/her portion of the band budget. If they fail to do that, the parents are expected to contribute the difference. That became necessary as it was always the same people involved in raising money and that didn't seem fair. Also, a year ago, the school hired an alumna right out of college as new Band Director, and it has worked out well.

To Sumwun--You need to keep your stupid comments to yourself (or find another outlet for your anger)! I think the local connection to Big Brown is amazing. My mother, who grew up in little bitty Foxhome, would also think so (if she were still here with us).

The only reason I changed my mind about my comment is that I thought it would go to Paul Gust's daughter (Dana). I do not want it to be published in the newspaper.

This is for Dana (Mrs. Happ Carr)--You look amazingly like your father! I didn't know he was such an outstanding athlete. I would have visited him at Pioneer if I had known he lived there (my almost 89-yr.-old father still lives in his house in Fergus, but we take it day-to-day). My grandfather (mom's Dad) worked for your grandfather at the Foxhome Elevators for many years. My husband (Bob) and I may look you up next time we go to D.C. Our condolences on the loss of your father. Elaine (Haarstad) Lee, Hilton Head Island, S.C.
