The newspaper should be a leader and sue the city council and city if this actually happens.

There's nothing wrong with writing about her criminal record -- what was wrong was there was no attempt (it would seem) to talk to the mom or to put that record into context. It was attached like a p.s. at the end of the story. Her criminal record is likely a reason young Daniel has to sell Kool-Aid to pay the bills, the very reason for writing the story. As to a letter writer asking "how do you think the son feels now?" If the kid didn't know about the criminal record, I'd be absolutely shocked. It could have been opportunity to write a detailed story exploring how a kid responds when being raised by a mother whom he knows has problems, but loves and wants to help and has responded in a positive way instead of going down a road so many other children travel down.
There was a complicated, truly powerful story hiding here. What the Journal attempted to do was tell it in black and white.

I completely agree with BloopTriple. OJ in the Fergus area is a story. Fawning over him is obnoxious. Defending your fawning and scolding readers for criticizing you while calling OJ "an honest man" (let's remember: he does have an armed robbery charge against him) is cause for firing.

Debbie come back! At least you wouldn't write puff pieces about OJ Simpson, right?
RIGHT?

Listen, even I thought the last comment made by that guy referring to Ms. Irmen's time in Albert Lea was inappropriate, but in response ... you delete the entire column?

I think the editor must really dislike you. Why else is he telling you stories about a drunk guy stabbing a cat?
