Interesting take on the Vikes, and I don't really disagree with your view. What I see is an ownership group that has selected the management team and are giving them the resources, time and support to build a quality team. I see a management team that is committed (with one exception) to upgrading each position the best they can, whether through the draft, trade or free agency. We have seen tremendous infusion of talent in the last 3 years. EXCEPT at QB. That is the position that has me puzzled. Its the most important position and has gotten the least emphasis. Unlike closing out a major league baseball game, not everyone can quarterback. The slugs the Vikes have run through that position more than proves the point. That's what I'm confused about.

Any time, Tom. And no, the Laddies is Scottland do not wear silts -- just the lassies, but if plied with enough ale & meade . . . . Great eye, Bigs, it was straight out of Wikopedia, just as you said. No research, just cut & paste.
Watched the Saints-Packers game. That's what offense should look like. I'm still flummoxed as to why the Vikes didn't want Brees for $3.5 mil when he was available. He cut up the Pack like he used to cut up the Gophs & the rest of the Big Ten.
Saw in Monday's paper that the Vikes got 15 first downs on 200 yards total offense. Yeah, the Jags have a good defense, but not that good. Is it bad enough that Childress is contemplating going back to TJack?

I watched the San Diego - Colts game and mused that it would be nice if the vikes offense could put together drives like those teams obviously can. Accurate passing, what a concept! 3 completions in a row! Plays that have a purpose! Now I'm stretching it.
What's Marion Gaborik's problem? Easy. He's a hockey player.
The Gophers football team, did they play this weekend?
As to the (s)eltic (k)eltic matter, that is a fascinating question, and Tom, the difference is not the same, but rather, different. The word "celtic" can be pronounced with an "s" or a "k" sound, as you point out, and can also be spelled with a "K", although then the alternate "s" pronunciation is not applicable. Generally speaking, the "k" celtic refers to the linguistic, religious, and cultural history, tradition and social institutions of the Kelts, and their continuing influence. You gave a good example of Celtic singers. Another example would be the Celtic neo-paganist movement in Villard and Forada. The "s" celtic generally is used in specific group names, most prominently sports teams. For example: Belfast Celtic - Northern Irish football team, Bloemfontein Celtic
football team, Celtic F.C. - of Glasgow, Scotland (football team), Donegal Celtic - Northern Irish football team, Farsley Celtic A.F.C. - of Farsley (near Leeds), West Yorkshire, England, Lurgan Celtic Football Club - of Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Oban Celtic - a shinty club from Oban, Scotland, Stalybridge Celtic F.C. - of Stalybridge (near Manchester), England Dewsbury Celtic - Rugby League team of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
And of course, the Boston Celtics. The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts, playing in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team is owned by Wycliffe Grousbeck and coached by Doc Rivers, with Danny Ainge as the President of Basketball Operations. Founded in 1946, their 17 NBA Championships are the most for any NBA franchise, while the 1959-to-1966 domination of the NBA Championship, with eight straight titles, is the longest consecutive championship winning streak of any North American professional sports team to date. They currently play their home games in the TD Banknorth Garden. The adoption in 1946 of "Celtics" as the team name is thought to have been an attempt to appeal to the large and increasingly properous post-war Irish communities in the Boston metropolitan area. There is little evidence suggesting why the owner may have selected the "s" pronunciation over the "k" sound, other than its historical "s" sound for sports team names. In any event, we all recall that the first rule of names is that the owner is the sole and final arbiter of its correct pronunciation.
Tom, glad you asked.

55 - 0, wow. The game brought to mind the 1983 Nebraska game, which I watched with a guy who had a $100 bet on the game. He had the Gophs and 50 points! In the first half he couldn't shutup about what a sap he had found to bet with. He didn't start sweating until midway in the third quarter. He was ready to be institutionalized by the end of that 84-13 debacle.
I hope RL is right about the recruiting value of an outdoor stadium. I recall the buzz about how the Gophs recruiting would be great once the dome was ready for them. I'm just saying . . . .

Good comments T & R. I'm in agreement on not trading our young pitching, unless its a real special deal. I'm also not excited about moving Cuddyer. This last season was a bust because of injuries, but he should bounce back with a full season, and then expect some pretty good numbers. I wish he could lay off the low curve better, but that applies to a lot of major leaguers. I think it was Killebrew, when asked how to handle the curve, said "swing at the fastball."
Gophs-Iowa in the dome -- last time we can say that (unless the new stadium falls over). Iowa's favored by 5 1/2 -- does that sound right?

Tom -- Think they can get hardy? & at what cost?

Tom --
Speaking of artform, you have perfected the understatement: "I think the Wolves are getting there though but it will be awhile before they are a playoff team." Yes, it will. Right now the team is a collection of parts laying on the garage floor. If they fit together at all, will you have a Lexus or a Pinto? Or a toaster?
You think we've got a realistic chance of getting Hardy? What's the cost going to be? They will loose CC and then Sheets, maybe. They need pitching. I'm not sure Mil will settle for Duensing & Swarzak. You think?
The Vikes. Good effort, close game. Another let down. They have great personnel, and a few voids. One is the center of the defense. Its hard to keep in mind that the Vikes seriously miss Henderson. Napolian Linebacker just isn't the same thing. Second void is QB. Frerotte is a quality backup. That's it. Third void is a talented game-planner. Not sure if that's Childress or one or more others on the staff. But each game the other team has the much better game plan, even with lesser talent. There may be one more void . . . at head coach.

Bigs -- well said. I couldn't agree more.

Great story, RanLars. And why was he listening?
Yeah, I guess I have no idea what was said between AP & Childress. I listened too much to the announcers who suggested AP called the play. I thought going for the 1st down was a good idea. But they ran the punt team out on the field. OK, that's the money call. Then the stupid challenge. OK, lost a time-out, now we punt. Then they go for it. I thought it was real dumb to go then. JMHO

I agree with your assessment, RL -- holes that you identified are looming. Vikes are suffering from poor drafts pre-Wilf -- I think the last 2-3 have been a lot better, but time will tell.
I've been listening to a Chicago sports talk radio show in the morning and its all the Bears. They say that this is the make or break game for them for the season. They seem to have more respect for the Vikes than I (we) do. In my view its shouldn't be a close game, but probably will be.
On The Vikings. is there a plan?
