Happy New Year
January 1, 2008
Everywhere you look in this New Year, ads for Weight Watchers, NutriSystem, and Jenny Craig are buzzing through the airwaves, and deals on gym memberships, and articles on simplifying your life are prominent in newspapers and magazines. All over the planet, people are resolving to lose weight, eat less, eat healthier, conserve more energy, clean out the basement, and get out of debt.
At some point in life, I’ve tried to achieve all of these goals, although never all at once. And for the most part, I’ve had limited success. But really, how do you measure this kind of success when you finally clean out that closet, donate clothing and household items to Goodwill, and then run right out to Target and fill up that closet with more stuff you really don’t need?
It’s a challenge.
Years ago, while in college, I put on what is known as “the freshman 15.” And by the end of my freshman year, it was more like the “freshman 25.” I also developed other “not so healthy” habits in those years related to my health and my finances that took me years to overcome.
But for the most part, I figured it out. I took baby steps. I practiced moderation. And while there wasn’t a lot of instant gratification, and it was not always fun, I settled into a fairly good pattern of recognizing my limits. I still have my ups and downs, but I feel like I’m in control of my life and my habits.
I think intuitively we all know what works. Be active, eat healthy and practice “certain” habits in moderation. As I blog in this space, I will do my best to include healthy recipes, but if they’re not so healthy, it’s still okay to enjoy. In moderation.
My wish for you is that 2008 will bring meaningful resolve to the goals you set., and that you will enjoy good food and good times with friends and family. I look forward to hearing your comments in the coming year.
