The doctor's visit

By Joel Myhre

So my visit to the doctor for a physical, the first in a couple of years, was about as I expected. My workout schedule has been just fine, going four times per week if possible. My heart rate of 118 over 78, with a pulse rate of 56, is considered good. In fact, he said the pulse rate of 56 might be too low, but he felt that was actually fine based on my exercise.

At 218 pounds, I'm quite a bit overweight according to the body mass index charts. But he said he figured if I could run a half-marathon at 200 pounds, then that's probably a good weight to strive for.

I have a fondness for an alcoholic beverage here and there, and he said the main issue is that alcohol represents a lot of empty calories. In other words, but cutting down, I'll probably help my weight loss along.

We spent a lot of time talking about family history, the fact that my father had heart surgery, that many of my relatives have been affected by cancer. I told him about my father's diabetes, and felt it was related to his weight issue, and he said that's probably a good motivator for me.

I still have to check my cholesterol, but if I were to guess, I'd say it would be slightly higher than when I was training for a half-marathon.

So anyway, my goals for the next three months: control my eating and drinking, and get back to my fighting weight of 200 pounds.
