A tough exercise

The other day, I saw a fellow golfer doing some weightlifting-like exercises that did not involve the traditional weight machines, but instead used medicine balls and stretch cords.
I decided to try the medicine ball one, which basically involved holding the ball out in front of you, lunging one leg forward, and then pulling back, doing 10 reps for each leg.
At first, I thought I wasn't even going to get much of a workout. It seemed easy.
It seemed easy, that is, until about an hour later. My hamstring muscles were so sore, I had to stumble around for a while. In fact, it wasn't until a couple days later that I was able to recover, and it took doing the exercise again and stretching out those muscles to get back to relative normal.
Clearly, my legs aren't in as good of shape as I thought. It should be a great exercise.
