Living a little

So it appears I have lost between eight and 10 pounds over the past month (depending on the scale and time of day.)

It was nice to see that number on the scale (in fact, I was really questioning whether the scale was working right.)

If indeed the scale is right, I would attribute the weight loss to a couple of things: working out consistently, eating better breakfasts, and snacking better during the day. It was relatively easy to get back into the workout routine. I think adding weights to my daily running, elliptical machine, bowling and hockey has helped.

Of course, I’m sure I could lose a lot more weight, a lot more quickly, if I were able to reduce my portion sizes at dinner and drink fewer beverages. It’s just really hard: you’re stressed out after a long day at work, and there’s a lot of good food on the dinner table and beverages in the fridge. It’s not that the food is bad, I just have no will power to eat less of it. I haven’t figured out how to beat the temptation. Every day, I think I’m doing well throughout the day, get home, blow it by pigging out, and then get depressed.

I have mentioned this to a few people, and the response is almost always the same, "Well, you have to live a little."

Come to think of it, the bottom line was that I wanted to get healthier. If "cheating" a little bit means I lose weight more slowly, but at the same time making lifestyle changes to reduce my weight overall, I should be OK.

Maybe the fact that I have lost weight will help me stay on course. We’ll see.
