My name is Sloanne Petersen. I am a senior at KSS, and I am an intern with Klara Beck at City Hall. No two days are the same in community development. One day we are going over grant paperwork and the next day we are planning a plane-themed retreat. I went into this work opportunity with nothing but a blank notebook and an open mind, and that is what has made my experience so fulfilling. We live in such a beautiful city, you wouldn’t think it had more in its back pocket, but then you get to see how much our local government has to offer, and it only gets better.
Although I do not currently foresee myself working in government, I have found its subsections to be very interesting. The process in which changes are made on our local level is extraordinarily detailed and takes many voices to make changes happen. Every person on a committee, council, or board shares the common interest of furthering our community. These groups seek out change and search for arising opportunities for the betterment of Fergus Falls.
Internships of any kind expose you to the real working world. No in-class simulation will ever compare to the way an internship can prepare you for your field of interest. Dipping your toes into the lake of professions via an internship can be much more time efficient than jumping into something you may not be suited for. Internships help you to find what works for you, and what doesn’t.
