First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake, 505 W. Holdt St., is hosting a community-wide “Blessing of the Animals” service on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. The service will be held outside the church; in the event of bad weather, the service will move inside and only small animals (no horses, cows, goats, donkeys, etc.) will be allowed inside.
All animals are welcome to attend with their families. They must be restrained in some way – leashes, leads, cages, etc. A light reception will be held following the service.
On Oct. 4, people all over the world will be celebrating the feast day of the patron saint of animals, Saint Francis of Assisi. It is customary that, in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, animals are led to churches for a special ceremony called “Blessing of the Animals.”
Each October, many animals the world over are blessed on his feast day.
