Ryan Hvitløk is leaving his position as Fergus Falls city planner May 3.
“My wife and I are moving to Kansas,” Hvitløk said Monday.
There are several reasons for the move, according to Hvitløk but one of the most important is the move will place them in a state halfway between Texas and Minnesota. They have family living in both states.
Hvitløk will be taking over the position of planner and development in an eastern Kansas community about three times the size of Fergus Falls.
“It is a little unexpected, I was hoping to be here a little longer than I was but after talking with the wife and kind of looking where we needed to be – closer to family – it was a good opportunity and they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Hvitløk said. “I am looking forward to doing things with a larger community but we have a good team that will keep things moving along just fine.”
Hvitløk believes the plan is that Fergus Falls will be hiring a community development manager and their job will be how to fill the city planner position.
Hvitløk started his job in Fergus Falls in July of 2018 after moving to Minnesota from South Carolina. He replaced Gordon Hydukovich, who was with the city for 35 years.
“We really liked the community, we purchased a house here thinking we were going to be here for the long term but life kind of happens and we decided to pursue opportunities,” Hvitløk said.
Hvitløk started his career as a city planner in 2008.
“We think Fergus Falls has a good sense of community, Hvitløk said. “It’s got a lot of people that are very passionate about this community and really want to see it at its best. I think great days are ahead for this community.”
