One of the victims of Monday and Tuesday’s murder spree in St. Paul was the husband of a former Fergus Falls resident – Kayla (Kowitz) Sanmiguel – a 2004 graduate of Fergus Falls High School.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family of Javier Sanmiguel. The Sanmiguels live in the Payne-Phalen district of St. Paul, 2 miles northeast of the Capitol building.

The 31-year-old father of four was shot and killed at approximately 10 p.m. Monday when he went to help after one vehicle crashed into another and then into a third vehicle at the intersection of Case Avenue and Edgerton Street.

According to Ramsey County court records, as St. Paul police reached the scene they saw multiple people fleeing from the intersection and pointing at a black Ford Escape sitting on Edgerton. The Escape had one occupant who had a black item in his hand which he immediately returned to the vehicle.

Placed under arrest was 27-year-old Lionel Keejuan Eaton of Roseville. Eaton, who has had dozens of encounters with the law according to court records, has been charged with second and third-degree murder. The second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years. The third-degree charge carries a 25-year sentence.

Sanmiguel was the father of four children under the age of seven. He had recently begun work as an interpreter.

Sanmiguel was one of three men shot to death in a nine-hour period Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning in three neighbors of St. Paul. The other two shooting victims were Nickey Taylor, 27, and Raumez Ross, 18.
