BARRETT — The West Central Area boys’ basketball team used strong defensive play and an opportunistic offense to cruise to a 87-47 victory over the Battle Lake Battlers Thursday.
"Once again our defense was very active. Johnson shot the ball well for them off the bench but we did a nice job on all five of their starters as we held Cameron and Van Erp scoreless,” Knights coach Kraig Hunter said. "Offensively was the same as our last game. Good aggressive play, good stretches, but some sloppy stretches we still need to clean up. Overall it was a good first week."
Grant Beuckens led the Knights in scoring with 20 points. Gage Staples (19), Jacob Bright (12) and Jack VanKempen (12) were also in double figures scoring. VanKempen would also add 14 rebounds for a double-double.
Leading the visiting team in scoring was Drew Johnson (18) and Riley Leabo (14).
The Knights would force 26 turnovers, while only turning the ball over 12 times.
The Knights will return to action Thursday, Dec. 12 as they host the Hancock Owls at 7:30 p.m.
The Battlers will look to rebound as they travel to take on Little Eight Conference foe Brandon-Evansville at 1 p.m. Saturday.
