Welcome back to school! The staff and I are eager to start the new school year and help your child learn and develop. We just finished a great week of inservice preparing for the school year. It is exciting that our district’s enrollment continues to grow, especially in the primary grades. The school board added a 10th kindergarten section this fall (normally we have eight sections).

The Fergus Falls School District has many options and programs for our community starting from birth to senior citizens, including: Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), ages 0-2; Otter Preschool, ages 3-5; McKinley Elementary (grades K-1), Adams Elementary (grades 1-2); Cleveland Elementary (grades 3-4); Fergus Falls Middle School, grades 5-8; and Fergus Falls High School, grades 9-12 (both located at Kennedy Secondary School/Roosevelt Education Center). We also have two additional high school options for our students, the Area Learning Center and our iQ Academy Minnesota online school.

Please visit the school website – www.isd544.org – for the 2018-19 school district calendar.

Free and reduced school meals application – An application can be found on our website at www.isd544.org. The form may be completed online or by paper application. All students who qualify for reduced-priced lunches will eat for free, but families must complete the confidential form to qualify. All kindergarten students are eligible for a free breakfast – the economic status is no longer a factor.

Traffic – Safety for our students around our school buildings is of the utmost importance. Please drive slowly and follow all traffic laws. Parents should set a good example by using crosswalks and avoid walking between buses or through busy parking lots when picking up their child.

Morning Traffic at Kennedy Secondary School – Kennedy Secondary School’s Parking Lot No. 2 is used as the bus transfer site for all K-12 students in the school district. Parents dropping off students at the bus transfer site should use the circle drive and Lot No. 1 near door A at KSS. At approximately 8:05 a.m., the buses will leave the KSS site to transfer students to their school.

Afternoon Traffic at Kennedy Secondary School – The afternoon traffic is more challenging at KSS because parents/guardians are parking and waiting for students to arrive from other schools and for the 3:20 p.m. dismissal time at KSS.

Suggestions to avoid congestion at Kennedy Secondary School, whenever possible:

1. Allow the buses to transport your child to and from home.

2. Wait until 3:30 p.m. to pick up your child. The buses depart at 3:30 p.m. so the bus transfer site – parking lot No. 2 – becomes available for a pick-up site.

3. Use the Armory parking lot for pickup. Your child can use the stoplight crosswalk to walk across Friberg Avenue safely to reach the Armory lot.

Peanut and Tree Nut Free Policy – Due to students with food allergies related to life-threatening peanut and tree nut allergies, the Fergus Falls Public Schools’ food service and family and consumer science (FACS) classes, will be peanut and tree nut free. Examples of nuts and products containing nuts are, but not limited to, peanuts, brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts. Our food service’s goal is to maintain a safe, allergen-free environment and will make every effort to be peanut and tree nut free, however, some food items may be produced in a facility where peanuts and tree nuts are used.

The Fergus Falls Public Schools allow peanuts and tree nuts or products containing peanuts or tree nuts to be brought to school by students for consumption during meals. Students with peanuts and tree nuts or products containing peanuts or tree nuts are not allowed to sit at designated peanut and tree nut free lunch tables. Students are not allowed to bring peanuts and tree nuts or products into classrooms that have students with peanut or tree nut allergies.
