The Ashby Arrows baseball squad took one step forward and one step sideways on Thursday, defeating Brandon-Evansville (BE) in walk-off fashion 4-3 before losing to New York Mills (NYM) 15-3.
Against BE, Ashby scored a run in the second inning, on a sacrifice fly.
Then trailing 3-1, the Arrows knotted up the game with two runs in the fifth, including an RBI single from Evan Paulson.
With the game tied, Carter Spangler delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the Arrows to victory.
Spangler started the game on the mound, pitching five innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and collected three strikeouts.
Taking on NYM in the subsection title game, Ashby fell behind early and could not recover. The game was blown open with a seven run fourth inning for Mills.
Carson Spangler and Hunter Norby had RBI walks for the Arrows. Carson also had a pair of hits in the game.
“We had a hard time finding the zone in a very small strike zone,” Ashby coach Jared Larson mentioned. Giving up walks will kill you against a team like that!”
The Arrows are now in the elimination portion of the bracket, with a chance still to move onto state. They will play Upsala/Swanville in an elimination game on June 7, in Minnewaska.
