ST. PAUL — At the conclusion of the state individual wrestling tournament Saturday, Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Central and West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville each had a member finish in the top four of the tourney at the Xcel Energy Center.
Fergus Falls wrestler Dustin Portales would finish fourth in the 285-pound division at the Class AA state tournament. After winning both his Friday matches, Portales took on Logan Wingert of Plainview-Elgin-Millville in the semifinals. Wingert would edge Portales by a 3-2 decision. Portales would compete in the consolation bracket, picking up a pinfall victory over Chisago Lakes’ Zach Carlson but fell in the third-place match to Calvin Menke of Scott West in a 5-0 decision.
In Class A, West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville’s Wyatt Olson finished third in the 195-pound division. In Olson’s semifinal match against Minnewaska Area’s Tyler Muliak. Muliak would top Olson with a 5-3 decision. Olson would rally in the consolation bracket as he went on to defeat Daniel Erlandson of Breckenridge (Dec. 6-1) and Derek Werner of Wabasso/Red Rock Central (Dec. 8-3) in the third-place showdown.
For Otter Tail Central, the Bulldogs saw Cian Buehler finish fourth in the 285-pound class.
Buehler would battle his way through the consolation bracket as he defeated Clayton Luther of Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland (Dec. 3-2) and edged Braden Willis of Mille Lacs (Dec. 2-1), setting up a third-place match against Jesse Jackson of Kenyon-Wanamingo. Jackson would pick up the victory after Buehler was injured and could not complete the match.
In the 145-pound division, OTC’s Max Naddy fell to Zach Spinks of Windom/Mountain Lake in a 6-3 decision.
Matthew Ziebell (170) of Pelican Rapids also competed in the consolation bracket Saturday, but fell to Minneota’s Shawn Buysse in the quarterfinals by a 5-4 decision.
