Back on the course: Fergus Falls cross country runner Emily Nuss stays in front of two Staple-Motley runners in Monday’s Central Minnesota River Run at Vintage Golf Course. Nuss finished third overall.

STAPLES — The Fergus Falls and Otter Tail Central girls’ and boys’ cross country teams kicked off their 2019 season competing in the Central Minnesota River Run at Vintage Golf Course Monday. After both varsity races were run, the Otter girls’ and boys’ teams each finished in third, while OTC saw its girls’ team place fifth and boys’ team finish in sixth.

For the Otter girls’ team, Emily Nuss led the way taking a third-place finish with a time of 20:47.6, while teammate Karolyn Papon (10th, 22:28.3)  finished in the top 10. Ainsley Hansen (20th, 24:11.4), Sierra Hatlewick (22nd, 24:31.0) and Rebecca Schindler (25th, 24:53.7) contributed to the team score, while Makenna Stenstrom (26th, 25:09.9), Ellia Soydara (29th, 25:47.6), Miah Schmidt (48th, 27:12.1), Natalie Fransen (59th, 30:08) and Emma Rund (62nd, 31:56.8) also competed for the Otters.

The girls finished with 77 points, while Staples-Motley (21) and United North Central (64) took the top two spots.

“The Otter girls had a great debut in Staples today,” girls’ head coach Niki Welde said. “We had tough rainy conditions to compete in. The course was wet and soft, making for a challenge.  I was very impressed with times they posted.”

The OTC girls’ team was led by Katie George (11th, 22:34.1) followed by teammates Laney Frost (15th) 23:27.1, Allyson Goodman (27th, 25:29), Kyleigh Shebeck (34th, 26:47.4) and Elizabeth Radermacher (39th, 30:28.2).

For the Fergus Falls boys, Luke Schroeder (19:21.9) led Fergus Falls with a 16th-place finish, followed closely by teammate Conrad Lobb (17th, 19:22.2). Kolsen Papon (23rd, 19:43.1), Joe Liebsch (29th, 20:11.9) and Zach Lobb (33rd, 20:26.4) counted toward the team score, with Aiden Lindgren (73rd, 22:39.9) and Tucker Rowlan (79th, 23:00.3) also competing.

Staples-Motley (17) won the race, while Detroit Lakes (54) and Fergus Falls (99) rounded out the top three.

For the Bulldogs, Cody Dolezal posted a top 10 finish coming in eighth with a time of 18:20.5. Thomas Himmelspach (36th, 20:40.2), Blake Alonso (56th, 21:35.9), Joseph Froslee (68th, 22:19.1) and Noah Mansker (74th, 22:45.0) rounded out the runners for OTC.
