Sprinting toward the finish: Pelican Rapids’ Tatianna Wiley races down the back stretch of the 400-meter dash Saturday during the Minnesota Class A State Track and Field Meet at Hamline University in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL — After the final finish line had been crossed, the Pelican Rapids 4×400 team stood tall at the top of the podium as Maddie Guler, Abby Syverson, Tatianna Wiley and Chloe Paulson won the event at the Minnesota State High School League Track and Field Meet at Hamline University Saturday.

The 4×400 team finished with a time of 3:59.56 in the Class A race. The Vikings justed edged the groups of Kailee Malone, Laura Pedelty, Hailey Lewis and Maia Peterson of Stewartville (4:00.06) and Belle Plaine’s Jaylen Struck-Schmitz, McKenna Ziemke, McKenna Herrmann and Lizzy Schmidt (4:00.12).

Individually, the Vikings’ Wiley earned a medal in the 400 meter dash, placing sixth with a time of 59.50.

Also competing on the second day of the event was the Otter Tail Central 4×200 team of Erika Heibel, Brooke Hovland, Kylie Frederick and Grace VanErp. The group finished in eighth place with a time of 1:48.12.

In the boys’ meet, Otter Tail Central’s 4×800 relay team of Thomas Himmelspach, Brady Scholten, Eli Carlson and Brennan Amundson (8:20.44) finished in 10th overall. Nick VanErp, competing in his second event at the meet, finished in 10th in the long jump with a leap of 19-10.5.

In the Class AA meet, Fergus Falls’ Robert Sewell closed out his senior season with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 22-02.5.
