PELICAN RAPIDS — The Pelican Rapids volleyball team hosted its annual tournament Saturday and came away victorious over invitees Hillcrest, Rothsay, Battle Lake, Breckenridge and Lake Park-Audubon.

The Vikings opened the tournament against Hillcrest and picked up a 25-17, 25-20 victory.

“We had just played Hillcrest last week so we were familiar with their aggressive serving and aggressive defense,” Vikings head coach Heidi Isaman said. “Pelican did a good job mixing up our offense and attacking at the Comets. We did a better job of receiving their aggressive serves as we did last week but struggled a bit with our blocking.”

In their next game, Pelican Rapids struggled early but found their groove as they defeated the Rothsay Tigers 25-20, 25-9.

In the following round, the Vikings took on the Battle Lake Battlers.

“We backed off our aggressiveness a bit and the Battlers came out with a strong block. The Vikings really struggled blocking and it was a tight battle. Some aggressive serving gave us a nice run and the Vikings won both sets 25-20 and 25-21,” Isaman said.

In the next round, Pelican Rapids cruised past Lake Park-Audubon 25-10, 25-12.

This set up a battle between last year’s two final teams — the champion Breckenridge Cowgirls and the Vikings.

“Breck came into this round with only one set loss and Pelican had zero set losses so we knew this was a repeat of last year’s championship match. Breck came out on top last year winning the tournament and the Vikings were determined to have a different outcome this year,” Isaman said.

In the first set, the Cowgirls held off the Vikings for a 25-23 win. Pelican Rapids responded in the second set as the Vikings picked up a 25-19 victory and the championship.

Rounding out the tournament placing, Battle Lake took third place, Lake Park-Audubon finished fourth, Hillcrest was fifth and Rothsay took sixth.

The Vikings will host West Central Area at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
