UNDERWOOD — The Underwood boys’ basketball team welcomed in Little Eight Conference foe Hillcrest Thursday. After a close first half of play, the visiting Comets gained the edge to pick up a 68-48 victory.
In the first half, the Comets took an early lead but the Rockets would battle back to cut the lead to 33-30 before the break.
Despite good offensive rhythm in the first half, Underwood could not keep pace with the Comets in the second as they outscored the home team 35-18 to seal the win.
“We really went out there and battled tonight,” Rockets head coach Evan Meece said. “The score was not indicative of how close the game really was. It was a physical game on both ends of the court and Hillcrest ended up on the winning side of things. Our first half was really solid and then we went on a few lulls in the second half and couldn’t get the ball movement to get our good looks. One thing that hurt us the most tonight was giving up too many offensive rebounds. We need to hammer down on getting rebounds and fine tune our offensive strategy moving forward.”
Leading the Comets in scoring was Micah Foss with 21 points. Teammates Thomas Zwiers (16) and Ev Gould (12) were also in double figures.
The Rockets placed three players in double digits as Krosby Aasness (14), Braden Thorson (13) and Winston Heifort (11) led Underwood in scoring.
The Rockets will look to get back on track as they host Battle Lake in another LEC showdown at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
The Comets will continue on the road as they take on the Rothsay Tigers in an LEC tilt at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
