The Fergus Falls volleyball team opened up the Section 8AA playoffs with a three-set sweep (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) over th hosting Staples-Motley Cardinals Wednesday.

“We have been waiting to have a night like this,” Otters head coach Renee Erickson said. “We came into the game with a few goals: communicate, play hungry and finish. We did all these things and it was good to see the girls respond.”

The Otters were led on the attack by Jade Zierden (12) and Hannah Prody (10), while teammate Sabrina Fronning led the defensive charge with 21 digs. Zierden (16), Kaia Strom (12), Logan Strom (12) and Tori Ratz (11) were also in double figures in digs.

Kaia Strom also had 28 set assists in the match. Strom recently eclipsed the 1,000 set assist mark at the Otters tournament Thursday, Oct. 17.

“It’s a big milestone. It stinks that it happened at a tournament where we couldn’t stop play to recognize the accomplishment,” Erickson added.

The Otters will now travel to take on the Perham Yellowjackets in the next round of the section playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday.
