ST. CLOUD — The Fergus Falls girls tennis team wished a bounce here or there would have gone their way as the St. Cloud Apollo/Cathedral/Sauk Rapids-Rice Collision took a 4-3 victory Tuesday.
After seeing No. 1 singles player Kailyn Richey fall in match one, the Otters took the rest of the singles competition as Amanda Nelson and Abby MacFarlane dominated their matches, while Becca Hofmann won two tough sets in No. 4 singles to give Fergus a 3-1 lead.
The Collision rallied back in doubles competition as Natalie Otto and Rachel Leen were down a set to Fergus’ Sadie Christianson and Katie Leitch but took two close sets 6-4, 6-4 to win the match. The Otters’ Taylor Pikala and Alice Schindler fell 6-4, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles to tie the match at 3-3.
No. 3 doubles was for all the marbles as Abby Lemke and Katie Mach of Fergus Falls dueled with the Collision’s Jackie Middendorf and Keanna Brudwick. The host took the first set 6-4, but the Otter duo mimicked its opponents winning the second set 6-4. In the third and decisive set, Middendorf and Brudwick held off Lemke and Mach to pick up a 6-3 game, set and match victory for the Collision.
“We played hard and had our chances in the doubles matches,” Otters head coach Norm Newell said, “but it was one of those nights when we just couldn’t get the key shot at the right time. Credit the Collision for playing well under pressure and coming up with the shots they needed to win.”
The Otters will return home to host the Rocori Spartans at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
