The Fergus Falls boys’ basketball team improve their record to 9-3 overall after dismantling the Cardinals 74-42 in Willmar Monday, sending the clock into running time during the final stanza of the game.
While the end score would indicate otherwise the first 15 minutes of the matchup was a give-and-take affair with the Otters and Cardinals exchanging the lead six times. Fergus Falls had the lead 26-25 with about three minutes left to play in the first half when the Otters found their rhythm scoring the last nine points before the break by draining three 3-pointers including one at the buzzer to go up by 10 points.
When the second half resumed the Otters picked up where they left off continuing on a 30 to two-point run the Cardinals never recovered from. Defensively Fergus Falls bounced from man to zone effectively which kept Willmar off balance while the combination of Chance Fazio and Ethan Olson beat up the Cardinals from the post position. Olson led the Otters in points with 22 followed by Fazio (19), Dominic Aguilar (13) and Cody Norgren (11). Fazio and Norgren also both recorded double-doubles to lead the Otters in rebounds with 10 apiece — as a team Fergus Falls outrebounded Willmar 38-23. Aguilar (6), Olson (4) and Brock Kotschevar (3) led Fergus Falls in assists. The Otters only turned the ball over eight times (four in each half), versus Willmar’s 10 and went 11-14 from the free-throw line.
The Otters now travel to take on Little Falls Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
