BEMIDJI —The Fergus Falls boys’ hockey team battled into overtime with Bemidji Saturday, but the hosting Lumberjacks would come away with a 5-4 victory.
Bemidji got on the board first as Tate Hammitt scored a short-handed goal in the first period.
Fergus Falls did not respond until the second period when Isaac Young tied the game on an unassisted goal at 3:11. The Lumberjacks regained the lead less than a minute later as Ethan Maish scored. The Otters tied the game again as Landon Thacker scored on a power-play goal with an assist from Michael DeBrito.
In the third period, the Lumberjacks scored their first of three power-play goals as Wyatt Mattfield deposited the puck into the net. But again the Otters roared back as Matthew Niblock scored off an Isaac Johnson pass to tie the game 3-3. Connor Savard put the host up 4-3 with a power-play goal, but a late score from DeBrito, assisted by Andrew Johnson, sent the game into overtime.
Bemidji would again take advantage of the power play as Wylee Gladen scored 28 seconds into the extra session.
Bemidji recorded 28 shots on goal, while Fergus Falls had 22.
The Otters will now prepare for a home Section 6A playoff game against Breckenridge/Wahpeton at 7 p.m. Friday.
