Fergus Falls boys’ hockey player Sterling Andrews pressures Willmar’s goalie during Thursday’s home game against the Cardinals.

The Fergus Falls boys’ hockey team rallied late to win a 5-4 Central Lakes Conference game against the Willmar Cardinals Thursday.

The Otters would take an early 2-0 lead with goals in the first period. Cole Zierden lit the lamp off a Isaac Johnson pass, while Isaac Johnson knocked in his own goal with assists from Logen Schake and Hayden Shol.

In the second period, the Cardinals would cut the lead to one with a goal by Elbridge DeKraai, but with under a minute to play Michael DeBrito scored for Fergus Falls to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

In the final period, the Cardinals would score three consecutive goals to take a 4-3 lead. The Otters did not throw in the white towel as DeBrito would tie the game at 15:06 off a Andrew Johnson pass.  Isaac Johnson would play hero for the Otters as he scored a goal with 41 seconds left to get the win. Assists on the goal went to Zierden and Shol.

“We lost the lead, gave up a couple of power-play goals in the third and then our guys rallied around that and were able to tie the game and scored another quick one to win it in regulation,” Otter head coach Mike Donaghue. “Credit to our guys, they stuck together and didn’t let getting down bother them and found a way to win at the end of the night.”

Fergus Falls will next host Rocori-River Lakes Saturday at the Community Ice Arena with the game slated to start at 12:30 p.m.
