BAXTER — The Fergus Falls junior high Nordic ski team competed at the regional championships Monday.
Athletes had the option of competing in a classic- or skate-style race, and many competed in both. All the races were 4K.
In the boys’ meet, Tommy Erickson, Oliver Thorson, Jon Krava and Jackson Lysne competed in the classic race. Erickson placed third, Lysne was sixth for the seventh-grade boys. Krava placed ninth. Thorson placed 11th for the eighth-grade boys.
Erickson, Krava, Lysne, Thorson, Braeden Bucher, Kristian Fransen and Dane Hastings all competed in the freestyle skate race. Erickson skied his best race of the year taking first place overall, grades 5-9. Krava placed seventh, Fransen placed 12th, Bucher placed 15th, Dane Hastings place 24th in the seventh-grade category. Lysne place fourth amongst the eighth-graders. For the ninth-graders, Thorson placed 12th.
In the girls’ meet, Naomi Dummer, Olivia Swanson, Alexis Wellman, Hannah Scharnberg, Libby Lingren and Alyssa Wagner all competed in the girls’ classic race. Dummer also had a personal best day on the course. In this race she placed placed sixth for eighth grade. Swanson placed 12th, Alexis Wellman placed 13th, Scharnberg finished in 18th, Lingren placed 24th and Wagner came in at 25th.
In the skate race, Dummer finished fourth-place overall for girls and second in her age category. Alexis Wellman finished in seventh, Scharnberg placed 11th, Swanson placed 14th, Lingren place 27th and Wagner finished in 30th place for the seventh-grade girls. For the eighth-grade girls, Holly Gutzmer finished 45th.
Besides the usual junior high athletes, the Otters had several MYSL athletes compete as well. For the boys, Ben Gudmundson, Micah Mouser, Elias Ronnevik, Noah Schlosser and Eric Swanson competed in the freestyle race. Schlosser brought home a third-place ribbon for fifth-grade boys, and Mouser placed in the top 10 at ninth place for the sixth-grade boys. Lauren Anderson, Ali Brendenberg, Jenna Thorson and Cassie Wellman all competed in the girls freestyle skate race. Cassie Wellman took fifth and Brendenberg finished sixth and both brought home ribbons for the fifth grade girls.
