Knee high

Hillcrest girls’ soccer player Mackenzie Foss puts pressure on the visiting Crookston defense during Tuesday’s home game.

The Hillcrest girls’ soccer team opened its season Tuesday against the Crookston Pirates at home. The Comets celebrated as they recorded a 1-0 win over the Pirates in front of a home crowd.

The Comet girls had swept the Pirates in three meetings last season and looked to continue the trend. With strong defensive play on both ends, neither team found many opportunities.

The Comets scored the lone goal of the game at the 52-minute mark as senior Taylor Kiss placed a Emma Abrahamsen pass in the left corner of the net.

Comet goalkeeper Emma Marfell recorded nine saves in the game, while Hillcrest had 20 shots on the Pirates net.

The Comets will welcome the East Grand Forks Green Wave for a game Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m.
