The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy football team got their season off to a great start Saturday as they defeated the visiting Hancock Owls 30-6.
The howling wind limited each team in the first quarter until quarterback Sean McGuire found Reggie Undseth for a 37-yard touchdown pass. The Comets held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first after a Jordan Foss extra point.
The Owls did not stray from their game plan, but it proved to be costly as winds of 25 mph saw a Kaleb Koehl pass end up in Undseth’s hands as the Comet scampered for a 15-yard pick six. The Comets headed back to the locker room at half with a 14-0 lead.
Hillcrest continued to control the game in the second half as McGuire broke free from the pocket and sprinted for a 59-yard touchdown. Nearly six minutes later, Foss connected from 27 yards out for his first field goal of the year to make the score 23-0.
Hancock broke through early in the fourth quarter as Koehl hit Noah Kannegiesser for a 63-yard touchdown. The Owls opted to go for two on the point after, but the Hillcrest defense held strong to shut down the opportunity.
The Comets closed out the scoring in the game as McGuire recorded his second touchdown toss of the game finding Sam Isaac for a two yard score. Foss hit the extra point as the Comets took home a season opening win.
Hillcrest produced 381 yards of total offense on 66 plays. McGuire led the Comets in both the air attack and ground game as he went 17 for 38 with 188 yards and two touchdowns and 116 yards on seven rushes and a touchdown.
Undseth finished the game with 126 yards receiving on six catches, while Chris Tungseth (4), Isaac (4) and Kyler Newman (3) each had multiple catches in the game.
The Comet defense gave up 230 yards of offense with 137 coming through the air. McGuire led the team with 11 tackles.
The Comets will hit the road for the first time this season as they take on Verndale Friday at 7 p.m.
