VERNDALE — A strong first-quarter performance by the hosting Verndale Pirates put the Hillcrest Comets football team in a deep hole that it was unable to get out of as the Pirates celebrated a 50-6 victory Friday.
“As far as the game goes, Verndale came out ready to play and we did not,” Comets head coach Derrick Clark said. “Three first-quarter turnovers doomed and us we fell behind big early on. We told our guys before the game that whoever controlled the line of scrimmage would win this game and that was definitely Verndale in the first quarter.”
The Comets lone touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter as Caden Fischer found Abraham Burleigh for a 14-yard touchdown. Fischer would also convert the two-point conversion as he hit Kaleb Swenson in the endzone.
Ben Christensen led the Comets in rushing with 99 yards on 24 carries.
The Comets will look to get back on track as they welcome in Rothsay for a 7 p.m. showdown Friday, Sept. 13.
