ORTONVILLE — The Hillcrest football team could not contain the Ortonviile Trojans offense as the host took home a 42-14 victory Thursday.
The two teams would play close through the first quarter as the Trojans broke through with a 14-yard run to take a 6-0 lead.
The second quarter was a different story. The Trojans tallied 28 points on runs of 25, 65, 1 and 10 yards to go into the break up 34-0.
Ortonville would close out its scoring in the third quarter as they scampered in for a 7-yard touchdown.
The Comets would get on the board late in the third as quarterback Thomas Zwiers took in a one-yard touchdown. The point after was no good.
Late in the fourth, Hillcrest added its second touchdown as Ben Christensen dove in from two yards out. The Comets converted a two-point conversion as Zwiers found Kaleb Swanson for the points after.
“As far as the game goes, we played three good quarters of football but unfortunately Ortonville was able to score four times on the second quarter,” Comets head coach Derrick Clark said. “They have a very balanced offense with great skill players across the board and we have up too many big plays in the second quarter.”
Zwiers led the Comets by both ground and air as he rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and went 11-for-18 for 95 yards through the air. Christensen finished the game with 56 yards on 15 carries and a score.
Defensively, Christensen and Micah Bermel recorded a sack and a fumble recovery.
The Comets will now travel to Verndale to take on the Pirates at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.
