West Central Area basketballer Blake Koloski is defended by Henning’s Isaac Fisher during Tuesday’s game in Barrett.

BARRETT — The Henning boys’ basketball team escaped with a 68-62 victory over the hosting West Central Area Knights Tuesday .

It was a game of runs. as the Hornets took an early 15-8 advantage.  The Knights responded with a 15-5 run to take a 23-20 lead, but Henning battled back to take a 35-27 lead into the break. 

The Knights outscored the Hornets 18-13 through the first nine minutes of the half to cut the lead to three but the Hornets would find a way to hold on for the win.

"It was a packed gym, a great atmosphere, and two teams that played their hearts out", Knights head coach Kraig Hunter said.  "We did a lot of things well, but in the end the difference was the outstanding shooting of Blake Wallevand and that we had a few more turnovers."

Blake Wallevand led the Hornets with 25 points, while teammate Isaac Fisher chimed in with 11.

The Knights were led  in scoring by Gage Staples with 22 points, while Jacob Bright added 15 of his own. Jack VanKempen led West Central Area in rebounds with nine.

Both teams played good defense with the Knights forcing the Hornets into 13 turnovers but committed 16 themselves. The Knights had a 27-24 rebounding advantage.

The Knights will look to rebound as they travel to take on Ortonville at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Hornets will continue on the road as they take on Verndale at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
