DETROIT LAKES — The Fergus Falls girls’ hockey team road a second period offensive explosion and the strong defense of goalie Ana Jyrkas as the Otters defeated the hosting Detroit Lakes Lakers 6-0 Tuesday.
In the first period, the Otters took a 1-0 lead midway through as Maddie Hulter lit the lamp with assists from Jade Zierden and Ellie Andersen.
Fergus Falls, with wind in their sails, found their offensive groove as they tallied three goals in the second. Piper Andrews would score back-to-back goals. Hope Goepfred would assist on the first, while Zierden and Chloe Nelson assisted on the second. Nelson would add the team’s fourth goal of the evening off a Vivian Karsnia pass.
In the final stanza, the Otters would add two more goals. Zierden would notch a goal off a Hulter pass, while Andrews recorded a hat trick off passes from Zierden and Hulter.
“Ana Jyrkas had her first career shutout tonight,” Otters head coach Tim Lill said. “Two breakaway saves were huge early in the game. Our goal scorers came to play also.
The Otters blasted the Lakers net with 51 shots compared to Detroit Lakers nine.
The Otters will continue on the road as they take on the East Grand Forks Green Wave at 2 p.m. Saturday.
