WILLMAR — The No. 4 (NJCAA Div. III) M State volleyball team took command of the court as the Spartans defeated the hosting Ridgewater Warriors in four sets 25-11, 25-12, 23-25, 25-14 Wednesday.

“We were looking forward to our match against Ridgewater because we were ready to open up conference play,” Spartans head coach Abby Crowser said. “After a strong first two sets, we struggled a bit in the third, but bounced back again in the fourth. It’s good to see that the team can regain their composure and finish solid after a lost set.”

Katherine Mastey led the Spartan offense on the attack as she recorded 11 kills, while Bailey Marty recorded 23 digs and Taylor Berndt chipped in 19.

Sydney Hovland would record a career milestone in the game for M State as she notched her 1,000th set assist and finished the game with 30.

“The highlight of the night was definitely having Sydney Hovland get her 1,000th set assist. We were so excited for her and she’s worked very hard for that accomplishment,” Crowser added.

The Spartans will get their first opportunity to play on their home court as they welcome in St. Cloud Technical College for a 6:30 p.m. tilt Wednesday, Sept. 11.
