The M State baseball picked up a pair of wins Monday afternoon as the Spartans defeated Rainy River Community College in a doubleheader.
In Game 1, the Spartans would edge their visitor 5-4.
The Spartans would give up a run in the top half of the first inning, but followed with three runs of their own in the home half. They would add two more in the fourth, but saw Rainy River provide a late inning scare before sealing the deal.
Eric Salvesen picked up the win on the mound for the Spartans as he went six innings, struck out two and allowed two earned runs.
Jake Dykhoff would lead the Spartans at the plate as he went 1-for-1 with three RBIs, while Rory Drewes hit a solo home run in the win.
In the second game, M State fell behind early but regrouped and commanded the rest of the game to pick up a 11-9 win.
Rainy River jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half. M State would respond with eight unanswered runs to hold a 8-3 lead entering the sixth.
Rainy River would strike offensively in the sixth as they tied the game with five runs. The Spartans weren’t done themselves as they responded with three runs in the home half of the sixth. Rainy River would add one additional run in the seventh, but could not break through.
Ryan Schmitz produced multiple hits for the Spartans while plating two runs. Drewes would again prove effective at the plate as he went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Westley Johnson would pick up the win for the Spartans pitching two-thirds of an inning in relief.
The Spartans will travel to Willmar to take on Ridgewater Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
