The M State football team’s season came to an end Saturday as the visiting Rochester Yellowjackets took home a 35-14 victory.

The Yellowjackets opened up the scoring in the first quarter as Justin Lynn found Phillip Hilleshiem for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Rochester would make the point after to take a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the visitor built a 21-0 lead as Lynn hit Michael Schimming for a 16-yard scoring strike and also found Michael Cole for a 5-yard touchdown pass. The Spartans would score before the break as quarterback Peyton Pruett found receiver Lucas Maloney for a 46-yard touchdown. M State would miss the extra point leaving the score 21-6 at the break.

The third quarter remained scoreless as each team struggled to find offensive consistency.

The Spartans attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter as Pruett threw his second touchdown of the afternoon finding Schanonn Spears Jr. for a 7-yard score. The Spartans converted a 2-point attempt to cut into the lead. The Yellowjackets would thwart the comeback attempt as quarterback Dylan VanBoxel plunged into the endzone from a yard out for a touchdown, and later VanBoxel would connect with Zach Buckeye for a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Pruett would finish the game 10-for-23 with 155 yards passing and two touchdowns, while Maloney recorded four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown and Walker Sheppard had three catches for 62 yards.

Defensively for the Spartans, Elijah Neal led the team with 10 tackles, while Andrew Nelson recovered a fumble and Joel Dorjuste had an interception.

The Spartans finish the season with a 0-7 record.
