Second day shots: M State’s Carter Justesen hits a tee shot on the second hole of Wednesday’s round.

CHAUTAUQUA, NEW YORK — The M State golf team moved into first place after the second day of the NJCAA Div. III National Tournament Wednesday.

The Spartans overcame a two-hour rain delay in the middle of the round to shoot a team score of 311 for a two-day score of 628, taking a one-stroke lead over Georgia Military (629). Day 1 leader Sandhills CC (630) fell back but is only two strokes behind.

“We played some very nice golf today,” Spartans head coach Jason Retzlaff said. “We got off to one of the better starts I can remember on our first nine and then rain came and we struggled a bit after the two-hour delay.  But the guys really hung in there all day and you can see each player getting more comfortable. We feel like our best golf is still out there.”

Individually, M State’s Hunter Moen sits in second on the leader board after firing a 76 Wednesday to bring his two-day total to 151. Sandhills’ Trey Capps (150) leads Moen by a stroke.

Rounding out the team scoring were Wyatt Blomseth (77), Blake Bloedorn (78) and Carter Justesen (80), while Austin Miller (84) tallied an individual score. Bloedorn (153) is currently in sixth, while Justesen (162) and Blomseth (162) are tied for 24th.

“Hunter played excellent again and Wyatt was a rock for us putting up a very nice round.  At the halfway point we have put ourselves where we need to be.  It will be exciting to be paired with two outstanding golf programs in Georgia Military and Sandhills tomorrow,” Retzlaff said.

The Spartans will tee off on Thursday at 9 a.m. Eastern time at Chautauqua Golf Club for Round 3.
