The M State baseball team picked up a pair of wins Thursday as the Spartans defeated the visiting Vermilion CC Ironmen.
In Game 1, M State overcame an Ironmen three-run first inning to pick up a 13-3 victory.
Trailing 3-0 entering the home half of the first, the Spartans climbed out of the early hole with a run in the first, four in the second and seven in the third. M State would add another in the fifth to force the 10-run rule.
Kain Carlson led the Spartans at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Matt Pietsch and Rory Drewes each collected two RBIs and two runs scored.
Jake Dykhoff got the win on the mound for the Spartans pitching five innings and striking out eight.
Reeling from the loss, the Ironmen had three big innings in Game 2, but the home team would hold on to take the game 10-9.
The Spartans scored three runs in the first inning, but Vermilion would respond with four runs in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. M State, trailing 9-4 after 4 1/2 innings, rallied scoring two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to seal the game.
Westley Johnson picked up the win for M State coming in relief of Levi Arnold in the fifth to pitch the final three innings.
At the plate, Ryan Schmitz, Kai Mcleod and Pietsch each recorded two RBIs in the win. Drewes would have three hits and four runs scored in the game.
The Spartans will be back in action Monday as they host Rainy River in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
