AUSTIN — The M State men’s golf team got its 2019 season off to a good start as the Spartans topped host Southwest Tech in a dual meet Wednesday.
The Spartans posted a 294 team score, 23 strokes better than their host (317).
“It was an enjoyable day of golf against another excellent golf program in Southwest Tech,” Spartans head coach Jason Retzlaff. “One of the nines we played at Meadow Green was shorter so that helped scoring significantly, but it was a very unique layout that forced the players to think about where they wanted to place the ball the on some tee shots.”
M State’s Carter Justesen took home medalist honors shooting a 68, one under par. Teammate Trevor Dalbec was runner-up with a round of 72. Rounding out the team score was Wyatt Blomseth (75), John Vall (79) and Grant Inniger (81).
“Carter Justesen was outstanding today shooting under par. He didn’t have a lot of stress out there and picked up where he left off after a great season last year. Trevor Dalbec also played extremely well and is someone who we know has the talent to be a very good player for us. Overall, it was a nice start and we look forward to building from it at home this weekend against a number of four-year colleges,” Retzlaff said.
The Spartans will next compete on Saturday as they host the Spartan Invitational at Pebble Lake Golf Course at noon.
