The M State baseball team recorded four wins over the weekend as they swept the Northland Pioneers in a pair of doubleheaders.
On the road Friday, the Spartans picked up 9-2 and 11-4 victories.
In Game 1, the Spartans jumped on the Pioneers with a four-run first inning. Northland could not get their footing as they plated a run in the second and fourth inning. The Spartans would close the door on the home team with two, two-run innings in the fifth and sixth.
Jake Dykhoff led the Spartans at the plate going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a home run and a run scored. Matt Pietsch, Devin Bush and Rory Drewes each collected two hits in the game.
Dykhoff also got the win pitching six innings, striking out four and allowing two runs on five hits.
In the second game, the home team put up some fight but could not keep their steam going.
M State jumped out to a 4-0 lead as they plated two runs in the second and the third. The Pioneers would rally to within one run in the home half of the third, but the Spartans responded with four runs of their own in the fourth.
M State sealed the deal in the sixth as they pushed three more runs across the plate.
Bush would lead M State at the dish going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Drewes (3), Pietsch (2), Austin Oetter (2) and Cody Arlt (2) each had multiple hits in the game.
Matt Hagen would get the win for the Spartans pitching five innings, fanning six batters and allowing three earned.
The two teams would meet up in Fergus Falls Sunday for another set of games. Despite the location change the outcome was the same as the Spartans took both games 5-2 and 4-2.
In the first game, the Spartans scored two runs in the second and three in the third to keep Northland at a distance.
Pietsch would continue to give the Pioneer pitchers problems as he went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a runs scored. Oetter and Schmitz each knocked in a run for M State in the win.
Levi Arnold picked up his sixth win of the year as he pitched four innings and struck out six. Skylar Mursu got his ninth save of the year in an inning of work.
In the final game of the weekend, each team was knotted at 2-2 but a two-run fifth inning and strong defense gave the Spartans the complete sweep.
Pietsch would knock in two runs for the Spartans, while teammate Drewes scored three of the team’s four runs.
Eric Salvesen got the win on the mound pitching four innings, striking out two and allowing one earned. Chandler Gramm recorded his first save of the year as he pitched the final inning.
The Spartans received the No. 5 seed in the NJCAA Region XIII tournament and will prep for the upcoming tourney.
