MORRIS — With a very close Section 6A playoff game, the Underwood girls’ basketball team recorded a 57-52 victory over the West Central Area Knights Saturday at the University of Minnesota Morris.
The Knights grabbed and early lead and pushed it to 17-10 midway through the first half. The Rockets rebounded with a 15-6 run before the break to hold a 25-23 lead.
In the second half, the two teams would trade baskets, neither team pulling away. The Rockets would find the edge late in the game, making key free throws to hold onto the game.
“We came out with the thought to be aggressive and be active on defense,” Knights head coach Eric Schoenbauer said. “We tried to do it and forced 25 turnovers, but we had 20 turnovers of our own. The girls did a great battling all night to the bitter end and it is terrible to feel like I cost them the game. If I wasn’t as hard on the officials may be the calls would have balanced out.”
The Knights were led in scoring by both Ella Van Kempen and Lexi Bright with 15 points apiece. Teammate Hailey Bennett also contributed 10 points. Van Kempen would record a double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Rockets were led in scoring by freshman Josey Bugbee with 18 points, while teammates Kayla Rocholl (14) and Morgan Evavold (10) were also double figures. Evavold also recorded a double-double adding 11 rebounds.
West Central Area girls finish their season with a 19-7 record.
The Rockets will now take on Parkers Prairie in a 6 p.m. game at Concordia College in Moorhead Tuesday.
