PERHAM — The Underwood volleyball team claimed runner-up honors in the bronze division of the KLN Perham Invitational Saturday.
The Rockets had a rough go at pool play as they went 0-3. Underwood fell to Perham (25-16, 25-14), Thief River Falls (25-18, 25-19) and Fosston (27-25, 25-18).
In the first round of the bronze division, the Rockets defeated Sebeka (25-18, 24-26, 17-15). Underwood would take on Henning in the championship, but the Hornets would pick up the 25-19, 25-7 win.
“The tournament provided good competition for us and we got better as the day went on,” Rockets head coach Diane Ross said. “I thought we played our best match of the day against a tough Fosston team but weren’t able to close it out. I was happy to see us compete through to the end against Sebeka.”
Brooke Hovland led the offense with 26 kills, added two ace serves and 32 digs, followed by Kayla Rocholl with 20 kills, four ace serves and 35 digs, Shaynah Smith had 12 kills and 11 stuff blocks, Amber Frigaard had 30 digs, Reese Richards chipped in 66 set assists and 24 digs, Ally Johnson had 19 kills and seven stuff blocks, Jo Bugbee had 10 kills and Brianna Evavold 36/37 serving and 41 digs.
The Rockets will now travel to Wheaton on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. match and return home on Tuesday to host Breckenridge at 7:15 p.m.
