BRECKENRIDGE — The West Central Area cross country teams traveled to compete in the Don Haugen/Deb Christopher Memorial Run with Randy Cross Country Meet.
In the boys’ meet, the Knights took the top spot with 24 points, 12 points ahead of runner-up Fargo North (36).
Jacob Bright would finish first for the second time this week with a time of 16:12.83. Teammates Jack Van Kempen (third, 17:01.95), Kyle Schill (fifth, 17:21.02), Kade Runge (sixth, 17:22.78) and Alex Salwasser (ninth, 17:29.59) all finished in the top ten.
“Jacob, Jack, Kyle and Kade ran together for the first half of the race and then Jacob appeared to have been shot out of a cannon at that point and left the competition behind,” Knights head coach John Van Kempen said. “Alex, our usual fifth runner, had to do some maneuvering to catch up to the pack to finish in ninth for us. Jacob and Jack are excellent leaders and their teammates feel accountable to them.”
Several other runners also participated for the Knights including Reubens Swanson (27th, 18:50.82), Shad Swanson (36th, 19:31.11), Dane Anderson (40th, 19:43.12), Bryce Kjesbo (41st, 19:48.31), Roman Mihailovschi (54th, 21:04.90), Jack Courrier (56th, 21:06.42), Peyton Hanson (61st, 21:23.56), Tyler Biss ( 64th, 21:40.59), Eli Bergman (71st, 22:14.39) and Camden Anderson (74th, 22:40.08) into the race.
The Knight girls would finish in fourth place at the meet as Teagan Nelson finished 10th overall with a time of 20:58.83. Brynn Fernholz (23rd, 22:39.96), Taylor Bennet (24th, 22:40.63), Terina Blascyk (34th, 23:33.05), Alexa Blume (47th, 24:08.81), Brooklyn Runge (63rd, 26:40.67) and Kennedy Porter (65th, 26:52.67).
“Teagan ran alone for much of the race but we expect to have Brynn and the injured Lexi Bright (who won the JV race again) to be running with Teagan as the season progresses. We really like where we are right now as we know once we are full strength we will be much faster,” coach Van Kempen added.
